The human eye excels at local automatic white balance in mixed lighting scenarios -- recognizing the red of a ripe fruit or the yellow of a tiger whether it's lit by midday sun, clouds, reflected leaf-green light, or blue sky is a critical survival trait. But if the scene is removed from it's context, the brain's white balance corrections can misjudge the color of the lighting and thus misjudge the color of the object.
