D-FA 24-70 v 28-105 on K-1

Was there a comparison of these two lenses ever made ? I read in the 28-105 staff review that it was to be done, but couldn't locate it. Apologies if I've missed it.

The 24-70 does seem to struggle at the edges, especially at the short and long ends of the range, and is heavy. Yes it has a constant f2.8 and its flare resistance is great, but I'm not enjoying using it. I wonder how much I'd lose swapping to the the lighter 'kit' lens and carrying primes to back it up.

We did a quick practical comparison here (look at the roof tiles):

HD Pentax-D FA 28-105mm F3.5-5.6 ED DC WR Review - Sharpness | PentaxForums.com Reviews

The TLDR is that the 24-70mm outperforms the 28-105mm, even wide-open, at the wide end. However, at 70mm the 28-105mm holds a considerable advantage.

At the end of the day the 28-105mm is no prime, but if you have a bag of primes to supplement the zoom when sharpness is paramount, then the 28-105mm will serve you well for everyday shots.

Size wise, DFA28-105 is better, good as a travel lens. With regards to image output, DFA24-70 is better. If I should sell one of the two, I'd sell the DFA28-105 as I find 24mm vs 28mm is a big deal practically.

Do you think you have a bad copy? The biggest problems I see with the DFA 24-70 are with some distortion and vignetting on the long end at f2.8. Both are pretty fixable and if you are shooting landscapes, stopping down takes care of it without problem. As biz-engineer says, there is a big difference between 24 and 28mm and for my style of shooting, having those extra 4 mm makes more difference than being able to go to 105 mm. I do think if you had DFA 15-30 you could get replace the 24-70 with the 28-105 without any difficulty.

I'm normhead and I approve this message.

The 24 of the 24-70 would be great, but the 28-105 is a great lens in it's own right. Especially with it's 3D rendering of landscape images. It brings something special to the table. We need two in our family, we both reach for it when we walk out the door, and Tess is using it on her K-5.

I wouldn't think for landscapes there would be much difference. Most landscapes are shot between f8 and f14 and at those apertures most lenses (including the 24-70 and 28-105) are probably fine.
