There are good and bad to both ways. No grip gives you a size and weight difference. A grip gives you extra battery life and the buttons to function comfortably when shooting portrait orientation. Having shoot both ways (much more with no grip), I prefer to shoot with a grip. I shoot weddings and love the fact that I can shoot an eight hour or longer wedding without changing batteries even being a thought. Since 50% or more of my shots are portrait orientation, I benefit from the buttons on the grip. And I do find the camera feels more balanced with my 50-135 and a grip. Just my 2 cents.
I have shot film manual wind cameras in this way for so long I can't get used to the use of a grip and the buttons. LOL. I suppose I need to try to get past that at some point.

K5iis and a DA*300mm here, and I prefer the balance with the grip. If I'm planning to mostly shoot with the da*300mm I'll bring the grip, otherwise I won't bother as I prefer to keep things small (my other lenses are all tiny in comparison!). It's pretty much personal preference I'd say.

The second battery came in really handy on a two week trip with my K10D, when I forgot the charger at home. By limiting chimping, I ran out of battery on the last day.

I understand where you are coming from, I started on a Spotomatic 2 back in the day. My father of all people was who turned me on to a grip.

DA*55, DA*16-50, DA*50-135 I can all use with no grip. The 50-135 I used on my K50 alot. I can use the 60-250 without a grip but I prefer to use it with a grip on my K3. On the K-1 the 60-250 is pretty easy to balance without the grip. I do have tendency to leave the grip on most of the time.
