when I checked my K 3 and K 5 II

______________________________________

what is the " official " maximum shutter counts possible on those models, does any one know?

Don't quote me on it, but I believe shutter life for all but the newest K-1 is 100,000. I'm not sure about the KP or the K- 70.

Though there has been others who get more than 100,000 out of their cameras, AFAIK, it could just be my imagination.

I saw that figure for the K 3 but I cannot find it now and don't remember where I saw it.

the reason this came up I " innocently "

[ Black Friday, Cyber Monday and recent postings to the Market Place wasn't on my mind at all ]

told my wife about the shutter count on the K 3 and she asked what happens if it went beyond the " estimate " and what could be done if the shutter failed.

The official lifetime rating of the shutter is 100k actuations for the K-5II and 200k for the K-3. That is probably not the maximum that is possible but what they are willing to guarantee. Some might last for much more actuations, some might fail shortly after the official rating or even before.

I wasn't sure about the K-3.

But I can't imagine shooting 100,000 photos unless folks are just snapping away at anything in the viewfinder, or they're event shooters, i.e., wedding, seniors, etc.

Well then just tell her that the shutter can't be replaced or repaired and the only solution would be to buy an new camera.
The best replacement would then be the K-1 since it's rated for 300k acuations.

willing to guarantee ??

what does that mean

as far as I know, the warranty for Pentax DSLR is 1 year in the US

so unless you really " push " it

you wouldn't be near 100,000 before the warranty expires

truth be told, I am interested in the current B & H offer for the K 3 II + battery grip for a few dollars more than the K 3 II body by itself

however since the K 5 II ( my back up ) has actually a very low shutter count and the K 3 has more but not a tremendous number compared to the reported maximum, I think I am not " upgrading " any time soon

AFAIK they're not guaranteeing (as in: repairing under warranty, even after the warranty expired) those 100k actuations. This is a MTBF rating, which means some shutters will fail earlier, other later - luck and operating conditions playing their part.
Of course, a 300k actuations shutter will tend to be more reliable than a 100k actuations shutter.

I don't actually mean a guarantee in terms of sales law. They will probably test a few dozen or even hundreds of shutters and if say 95% last for more than 100k acuations then this is what they will rate it for. That's what I meant with guarantee. A safe number they can tell their customers.

I would think that if you shoot single frame most of the time, and treat your camera body with some respect, that the shutter would continue to function past the mentioned actuation count in most cases.

For those of you who used film in the past, 100.000 shutter actuations is more than 2500 rolls of 36 frames, more than what I shot between 1980 and 2003 when I abandoned film.

Actually it is pretty easy if you use interval shooting: simple twenty-second movie requires 1000 actuations. Record one take a day, and shutter unit is due for replacement in three months.

The K-5 is rated for 100k, and the K-3 is rated for 200k.

This is neither a maximum nor a guarantee, but rather more of an expected durability figure. Some shutters break earlier, others seem to never break.

But of course using digital enables you to shoot more, so it's hard to make a direct comparison.

Taking three photos everyday it would take 250 years to wear out your K3 shutter
