Lower spec K1

If you are the designer for the next Pentax traditional full frame, and you have to price match the KP, what K1 features are you willing to drop?
This is not Pentax usual policy, but it would be interesting..

I guess sensor size would be the obvious. Put an APS-C sensor in the K-1...........

An interesting thought problem, but no one, especially Ricoh, is going to bring out a FF camera price matched to one of their APS-C cameras. Even if it was possible they still wouldn't do it unless they had decided that APS-C was going to be abandoned.

Yes, that why I thought about "if" Pentax decided to drop the apsc line.
Which would be a very sound business decision, all these apcs cameras floating around, hard to compete.

Just keep the K-1 in the lineup and discount it to the mid $1000's alongside whatever might come next.

Not sure about that. I would say APS-C is still the majority of DSLR camera sales, by a very large margin. At one point it was noted that total FF camera sales were only about 5% of the market. That may have changed some but not a lot. No way anyone is going to walk away from 90% + of their market.

Basically? A full frame K-70 24mp but with the K-1 AF. Of course only do that when you have a K-1 successor that is priced a bit higher than the K-1 is now with improved AF. There needs to be a reason to get the more expensive model.

Exactly this. I'd buy it on day 1 of the release. It could even have K-50 AF, and I'm still in.

Winner!
My biggest problem with all of Pentax's APS-C bodies is the lack of an OLED overlay in the viewfinder. K-1 has it. Nearly ever DSLR on the market save for Canikon's cheapest have had them for years. It's so much better to know where your focus point is set without having to move it or use AF and it's also useful to know which focus mode you're in. It's the only feature that's keeping me from upgrading my APSC Pentax body.

Stick the sensor in the K-01 body*, replace flash with EVF, and swap fixed rear screen with simple tilting one.

Job done.

* yellow silver, black, white, and smurf of course

I'd prefer that Ricoh increase the price to $4000, fit a 67Mpixels sensor (10 000 x 6700 ), drop AA simulator, drop pixel shift and drop smart dials.
For price sensitive users, they have the choice of getting a KP which is nearly as good as a K1 , from looking at images taken with the KP.
There isn't enough difference in IQ between a KP and K1 to justify the spending on full frame system.

This with a 24 megapixel FF chip with K-3 II auto focus and the accelerator chip from the K-70 and I would be in.

This is a good business path. Likely the costs have been recovered, so you generate incremental revenue on K-1 and high margin on your new FF camera.
