Amazon launches in Australia ... without "guess who?"

Amazon has just launched in Australia this morning. There is camera gear and lenses from the usual suspects, but no Pentax. The Ricoh Theta S is there though, for $80 less than the best price I've seen elsewhere in Aus.

If Amazon can be encouraged to sell Pentax gear, it may put some downward price pressure on the brand here.

I think it's only a matter of time. Since anyone can sell on amazon, it's a great place to compete with the big stores.

Do the prices include GST? Overseas sourced items are subject to it, at least I think the new rules apply now.

I must admit to being a little wary of the Amazon juggernaut, though.

This is a bad move for Australia, many will use it and businesses, family businesses will close because of it, bad move letting them in, I say boycott Amazon for sure, send them packing.

Sears stores are closing, Macy's is in trouble, K-Marts, and more. Part of this is due to consumer ignorance. I can see electronics, including cameras, since even traditional stores are selling through Amazon, but shoes and clothing? First, I do not relish having to sit home waiting for a truck to arrive. Ok for an occasional purchase like a camera, etc. but for week-to-week purchases? And I like to try on my shoes, clothes, and of course do my shopping at my convenience, then go about my other business. Even grocery stores are running scared from Amazon!

It's just a local retailer. GST applies as to all. Import rules are irrelevant, as goods are sold and shipped within Australia. Many goods are also sourced from Australian manufacturers.

As they don't have any Pentax equipment listed I did a price comparison check on several Canon and Nikon cameras. In every case Digital Camera Warehouse were cheaper.

That's right. Amazon is A place to shop, not THE place to shop. I think I have bought from Amazon once or twice when price comparisons showed they had the best price for what I wanted. CRK or Australian suppliers have been better in many cases.

Had a quick browse, and so far there is nothing interesting at all about the AU store. Not even any good opening deals.

Wow, it is VERY hard to find. All sorts of "Pentax" searches show nothing, nor does "Pentax" appears under "P" in "Camera & Photo".

Bob, your two links are both marketplace sellers, not Amazon itself.

Not particularly good buys. Re the sellers: who the hell are 'Camera Electronic'. I think they are from Malaysia, not AU. And 'michaels camera-video' seem to be from Italy.

Buyer beware.

It would be a great place to try out drone deliveries away from the cities - if they have a big battery

Camera Electronic are a B & M store in Perth, very legit and used to have a lot of Pentax gear but didn't seem to carry much the last time I looked at their website.
