Wow, great replies!

That said, a hybrid OVF/EVF would be an amazing best-of-both worlds innovation.

First, there's lots more that can be done with IBIS in terms of enabling combinations of modes (e.g., astrotracer + PS would be killer!), improving total stabilization, adding higher resolution PS modes, or creating an API so the user could drive the IBIS system on a custom-drawn path.

update with UHSII SD card(s)
These ones speak the most to me! The Pentax OVFs are great, but hybrids might be the next big thing. Some brands are already working on this. The SR is a Pentax staple and it would be nice to get even more functionality out of it.
The write speed (with bigger, faster buffer) and AF improvements would be pretty nice, though these would not be a game changer. Lots of users would still like it and it would make Pentax more competitive against the rival brands. Live view and focus peaking are still really "old generation" implementations in Pentax cameras and could use an update, as well.

I think a big project could be something similar to the FA limited trio. Either updating those designs with new coatings, aperture blades, silent AF, QS and WR; or making completely new trio

If Pentax really want to make a big splash without spending a lot on R&D then maybe they could entirely reinvent the camera body.

They could start with a K-mount ring, K-1 mirrorbox, focusing screen, pentaprism, and IBIS sensor assembly -- the central innards of a K-1. That defines a small 2" x 3" brick of core photographic magic. What they add to the left, right, top, bottom, or back of this brick is entirely up to their imagination. Maybe the body should be shaped like binoculars or the wood-handle grip of the 6x7? Maybe the central body is a cylinder with a hoodman-loupe eyepiece in the back with internal flip mirror between pentaprism OVF and and EVF? Maybe the grip is like a pistol grip under the mirrorbox or like a big faucet tap to the side of the mirrorbox? It could be anything!

The traditional DSLR/MILC body shape with a rectangular box is no longer needed because the camera no longer has a film cartridge that must sit to the left of the lens and a take-up spool that must sit to the right. The shape of all the cameras on the market is basically an obsolete hold-over from the film era.

Today, the shape and ergonomic orientation of the hands are entirely open for redesign with the only constraint being the central mount-mirror-sensor block and enough volume to house the battery and electronics and enough convenient surface area for buttons, dials, and displays.

The final result would be no more costly to design and build than a new K-1 but the look would be head-turning and iconic.

An EVF that mounts on the flash hot shoe with simulated split screen for manual focusing.

Hopefully:
A first in class AF system! (not that I'd need it... K-S1 AF is good enough for me.)

Also: in camera focus stacking (I think it would be very useful to a lot of people and Pentax could do a great job, considering how good their HDR and pixel shift work so well).

On the lens side:
- a wide angle prime i the 17-20mm range so people wouldn't have to carry their 15-30 around and actually could use filters.
- a 35mm f/1.4 DFA*
- a 24mm f/2 DFA Limited
- a 135mm f/2 DFA*
- compact f/4 or even f/3.5-4.5 versions of their trio of DFA f/2.8 zoom lenses
- A 23mm f/2.4 plastic fantastic for APS-C.

As far as camera bodies, I'm sure they're working on the 645Z successor first, then on the K-3II successor, then on the K-1II.

Thinking outside the box:
Maybe a 20 or 24MP full frame camera that will kill all other FFs (except perhaps the A7SII) in low light and provide smaller, more manageable yet super high quality files for professionals like wedding, event, journalism and fashion photographers.

Next big Pentax project?
Not one more product that sells with quantities equivalent to 5% market share.

The next big Pentax project would be a user sponsorship program and photography introduction in schools to source new younger generations.
The sponsorship program would consist of giving a discount to Pentaxians valuable to the next camera upgrade for who organize meetings to promote Pentax cameras to non Pentax owners.
If someone manage to convert a Canonian or Nikonian into a Pentaxian, he would be canonized (Ricohized) at a ceremony at Pentax HD Japan.

In 2007-2008 years 14 (I think) DA lenses were released, 13 of them new designs. Four were DA* lenses, of which three were zooms. If we had a similar release schedule over the next 24 months for D FA lenses, most of which were high quality f/4 or variable consumer zooms and f/2 - f/4 consumer primes, would that count as the ‘Next Big Project’?
Fuji seems to be cranking out medium format lenses. Do they have that much greater R&D than Ricoh Imaging? Just a question

Next "Big" project? 645ZII with 16-bit Raw, Pixel Shift, Better AF, Mechanical shutter, Bigger buffer, SD UHS-II compatible (though UH-SIII would be better).
