Shifter, take this disaster and turn it onto an opportunity for an upgrade!

If you don't mind spending a few $$ (or ££ in your case) you can get a Cats-Eye screen upgrade (or a cheap chinese imitation). It makes the use of manual lenses a lot easier.

The general opinion is that the chinese nockoffs are decent, at least as good as the focus screens you would have in your old film slr. The katz eye however is something special (apparently, I don't own one). However, you will loose spot metering with either one, and unless you manual focus lots, theres no point to either.

What is the benefit of this focusing screen compared to Pentax's OEM focusing screens?

Sorry, but this isn't true. The Katz eye screen handles spot metering well. You only have to adjust about +0,7 stop. They mention that at their website btw.

The major advantage of using a Katz eye is the fact, it won't black out until F11.
The cheaper ones usually start at f4.0- f 5.6

Fact is: once you have used one, you never want something else. even if you keep on using af lenses. It's expensive, The standard one with no extras is $ 105 at the moment. Plus vat, customs etc....(add 20%)

A very happy( longterm) Katz eye user.
Martin.

If Katz eye screens aren't your fancy, you can buy a new focusing screen from here:

PentaxWebstore - Home.

Or ask for them at your local Pentax dealer.

With my K100D that would mean that it's be just about right.
It's under around -.7 stops.

They are identical in every way, as far as I know.

I was told otherwise. They are different thicknesses and maybe even dimensions. Otherwise people with k100d would be buying the k10/k20/k200 screens from ebay...
