Sigma 70-200mm Lens problem with KP / ideas?

I just bought my KP and one of my lenses and the camera don’t seem to like each other.

The lens will autofocus once, then lock up, the shutter won’t release, and the camera won’t turn off and on.

My other lenses work just fine. The lens is a Sigma AF 70-200 2.8 II Macro HSM.

It worked great with my K50. Any ideas?

The lens likely needs a firmware update, which Sigma should be able to install for you if you send it in.

Is sending it in the only option? I really need the lens 1/6 and 7.

That lens doesn't support downloadable firmware updates. If you live in New York you can take it to the Sigma center there as I believe they do walk in service. Other Sigma authorized service centers may not offer walk in service.

I live in Tejas so guess I’m mailing off a lens.

I'd contact them first to see if they have an update that will add KP support, but if they do, then yes you will have to mail it in. Only the Global Vision (C, A, and S) lenses allow you to update via the dock.

Is there a possibility that there is no update, and that the lens will not work at all with the KP?

What a disappointment this all is! Bright and shiny new camera and my $1K lens won’t work with it!

This is a known issue with this lens that first surfaced full-blown on the K-1. Some copies provide an ambiguous LensType id ("8 255") shared with five other Sigma lenses having disparate specifications. Whether the id is the cause of the problem or just a marker associated with a bad lot is unknown. Lenses without the problem as well as those that have been re-flashed have "8 16" as the LensType.

My Sigma EX DG 70-200/2.8 HSM II didn't play nicely with my K-3, but was fine with my K-5 bodies.

I don't have it (or the K-5's) any more, but this sounds like a similar issue. I hope a firmware update sorts it out for you.

Had the same problem when i went from the K20D to K3-ll. The firmware update fixed it. Just got the K1 and it works fine on that also. I'm guessing that the firmware update will fix it with the KP. But as Adam said. Best to contact them before sending it in.

I purchased a used Sigma EX 70-200mm 2.8 II Macro HSM last summer. Only had time for one walk around test with the K3. Worked fine, no issues. I thought it would show some problems as you described with the KP that I have since October (Open Box from BandH). So far it's working fine. But with very limited testing. I will take them with me this weekend to check how they perform together (with KP) walking around Old San Juan. If this is the same lens you have I guess it might be a specific lot. I will come back to comment if I'm able to use to use this lens during the weekend.

Best of luck with getting it updated. Let us know how it turns out.

I can say this: The continuous firmware/software/update questions are putting a damper on my renewed photography enthusiasm. I have a very expensive lens, want a better camera, and now the lens seems incompatible- or at least needs some sort of updating assuming it’s available.

Meanwhile i just popped a $ grand on a camera body I can’t use.

I do not blame you one bit for being disgusted. I would hate that situation. From my point of view, all compatibility matters should be pre-sorted out before the product is released. It seems there were some issues with the K-1 as well. I too want my equipment to be functional immediately upon receiving it. I hate fiddly-diddly, let alone with new equipment I am purchasing. Computers drive me crazy enough as it is. So far my KP has worked with older lenses with which I have tried it, but there are some I have not yet tried. My K-5 IIs has been fine with all, and I have no intention of getting rid of it!

Hopefully, you will get the help you need soon, so everything will finally be on track for you. Based on the experience of Craig66, it seems doable.

I understand where you are coming from. Nothing like having good equipment that you spent big bucks on that isn’t working together as it should. Don’t get frustrated too much, send it into the shop and let us know how you make out. I know you will enjoy the KP mine is sitting on my counter with a battery grip and D FA 70-200 * for tomorrow to play.
