We are taking our Q with us this summer, instead of T's K-5 kit. It will save a lot of weight and be a lot more portable. We are seriously trying to get down to a single carry on portages.
For your purpose I suggest a simple Hoodman Loupe - the one with elastic cords that hold it on - which turns the LCD into a giant EVF. About the same size in its case as a Q7.

IMO Q is a camera for people who have fun figuring out how to get great images out of their gear. Casual shooters can do pretty well. Diligent shooters can make outstanding images. Secondly, it is fun to do things like make credible shots with a Red Dot sight and a DA*300 adapted to a Q or Q7 with the Pentax adapter at something like 1500 equivalent mm. See some of Crewl1’s work with this combo. The challenge is the object.

I’m considering taking my Q7 kit to Pikes Peak this summer instead of a traditional camera bag just for the fun of it.

Would I? Already have. I also would buy a Q if Pentax relesed a new updated model with no AA filter.

We have one, not a Hoodman but similar.

You'll struggle to get shots like this with any other pocketable camera:

Complete in the sense of "That's all, folks!", maybe,
but we're missing the 09 telephoto macro!

That kind of setup is the workaround we are left with,
but it doesn't give the speed and convenience that the 09 would have offered.

A truly complete Q system would have opened up the new genre of "action macro".

Based on my experience of using the 06 zoom with a Raynox, I can see why there is a problem with the 09 macro.
The CDAF got confused easily with the contrast (or lack of), the very shallow DOF to lock AF and the dimness in lower light.
I think IIRC, Pentax cited some of these reasons too as hurdles to the 09.

Q7 and the F100/2.8 macro works well for me.....

It's not clear to me that experience with a close-up add-on
would translate to a true macro lens.

Do you have any references for that?
It certainly does not match with the "AF is fast" observation from
Pentax Q macro lens coming - PentaxForums.com

Were those guys moving?
My point about the 09 Telephoto is "action macro."
