New K10D - 50mmM 1.4 vs. 18-55 kit

It came in yesterday, I went out last night and took a few shots that I did when I first got my *ist D. I decided to compare the new Kit 18-55 lens to my 25 year old 50mm M 1.4.

As it turns out this test is not really fair, I want to point that out from the start. I wasn't thinking last night and took the shots at f5.6, wide open for the Kit lens. So I will repeat the test later this weekend at f8, f11, and f16.

The photos were taken in DNG RAW format and converted with Bibble pro, no correction was applied, only resized the shots and saved them as jpg. The 100% crops were saved as 16bit png files to preserve as much detail as possible.

So here we go, first the resized shots to 800 pix wide

Pentax 18-55mm

f5.6 1.6 sec, iso 100, at 50mm

Pentax SMC M50mm 1.4

f5.6 1.6 sec, iso 100

Next two 100% crops from the head of each one. saved as 16bit png files. Sorry I don't seem to be able to link them to the forum, so you have to go to my pbase pages to see them.

Tell me what you think, and if your interested in the fare tests at f8, f11, and f16.

Looks like you did a better job of focusing the 1.4. Had the kit lens been at the exact same focus point it would have been a closer contest.
I did a similar test with my 50mm 1.4 A lens vs the kit lens a while back. The 1.4 is very slightly better at 5.6, but at any stops smaller the differences are negligble. The corners are a little better in the 1.4, but again not that bad.
I also compared the 50~200 zoom to a couple primes, 135 and 200. The new zoom is definitely much better.

Yeah, I let the auto focus system take care of it, I did think about that during post processing. I think stopped down it won't be that bad, and I may manualy focus next time I do the test.

I fugured that would be the case. I will post my results when I do the stopped down test.

I wouldn't mind seeing your test results.
