I thought Pentax wasn't good for shooting sports....

Yesterday was a dark, cloudy, rainy day on the football field. My aging K-5II and new DA* 60-250 performed well. The AF is slowish for initial lock but point-to-point was excellent. The lens is faster focusing on the long end (200 - 200mm+). These were shot wide open...

Very nice!

Some years ago my son was involved in putting on alumni football games and I did some photo work for him. At that time I had a K20D and am pretty sure I used a Sigma 17-70mm lens. The daytime shots most all came out very good, but I did have some problems with the night games - camera would focus but then I'd get movement blur. So, for me - using Pentax (even older technology) to shoot sports worked just fine!

AF works better when you want it to succeed that when you want it to fail.

Don't believe everything "they" tell you.

I do a lot of Australian Rules Football for my local club, using K5 IIs and Sigma 150-500mm HSM. I have in AF.C, centre focusing point using back focus button. Sure it is fairly slow to lock on from one extreme to the other but one in the zone it seems to track fairly well. I think for my purposes keeping a reasonable depth of field f8 is the key.

The Sigma 70-200mm HSM is much quicker to focus but I do enjoy the greater reach of the 150-500mm

I am from Aus but I am trying to shoot lacrosse for my local club. It definitely got a bit easier when I upgraded from the Pentax-M 400mm to the DA*300 .....

The DA* 300 really delivers. Excellent photo series.

I shot with the Sigma 50-500 back in 2008-2009 on a K-100D Super. Back then I had to use a manageable aperture (between f/8 - f/11) and manual focus.
Excellent photos. Nicely done.

I've often wondered if my sports photos would really be better if I shot with a different brand, because I too have always heard that Pentax was no good for sports shots. I get to be on the field every Friday night for my boys High School football games and have been taking pictures with my Pentax cameras for every game. I upload the full size photos to a site light Pixieset and email out the link so parents of other players can have access to any photo I might take of their boys too. I've never had any complaints or anyone suggest to me I switch camera brands.
