Looks like you're in the right place if you're considering the 12-24:
Pentax DA 12-24mm F4: $599 AUD - Pentax Australia. A bargain! - PentaxForums.com
Get one of those and an umbrella...

Cheers

Jonathan

A good alternative would be the DA 18-135mm or the DA 16-85mm plus the 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 PLM. That would give you a bump up not only in terms of image quality, but also focusing speed, across the board.
Perfect answer

After so many good comments about the Pentax DA 55-300 I think that may be my next purchase, I will use the Tamron on my old 6mp ist body.

A super zoom is a very useful lens to have for certain needs. You can go instantly from WA to closeup without needing to change lenses. There are circumstances where this capability is paramount to get the shots you need and get them efficiently. Something like a graduation, for example, where you can nab a group shot and right away zoom in for a closeup of one individual or two as they talk with each other, etc. All this from a distance, even if you are seated in a crowd of people. It can also be very good for sight-seeing if traveling with group, where changing lenses would be too awkward and time-consuming.

But unless needing a lot of zoom range, the DA 18-135mm is enough zoom range for most such uses, and it is of much better construction, including WR, and has far better AF. Its image quality is very good overall, its central frame area being excellent throughout.

You will find the DA 12-24mm f/4 to be a terrific addition to your kit- a very high-quality lens!

You are indeed correct, Mr Fox. Black, and to be neatly furled at all times except when deployed to keep that pesky rain off one's bowler. Actually, of course, a white one would also serve as a parasol and flash diffuser and hence be far more practical, but since when did we Brits ever take the practical option if a traditional one is "the done thing"?

hmm, could you get a black brolly lined in white fabric ?

that way a photographer could use it as described

and any shade, regardless the coloration, does give protection and some relief from temperature and sun light
