Well, one thing is for sure. It seems like the K-3II supply is starting to dry up in the USA. It looks like B&H doesn't carry it anymore. It's still selling at Adorama, but who knows for how long.

Yes I looked at that info.
Main difference seems to be the newer sensor in the K1 ++ vs heavier --
I guess i would like to hear more about IQ and upper print sizes people are happy with with the K3ii
or anything else I probably overlooked.

I also have the 16-85, and it us a great lens. If you bought a K-1 or K-1 II and accompanied it with a Pentax 24-70 you would have a similar wide angle at the short end and a little less telephoto at the long end, and would have 36 mp (K-1 or K-1 II sensor) as opposed to the K-3 II 24 mp. There is also the Pentax 15-30 lens which would be wider, but it does not accept circular screw on filters.
Or just buy the 28-105. Save yourself a pile of cash. I have so many 2.8 or faster prime lenses that are FF capable, buying a zoom between 14mm and 300mm doesn't make any sense.

Imaging resource rates the maximum print size per ISO if you want good quality, scroll down to "print quality analysis" Pentax K-3 II Review - Image Quality

Quoted from their article: Very nice 30 x 40 inch prints up to ISO 200; a good 11 x 14 inch print at ISO 3200; a usable 4 x 6 at ISO 12,800.

My guess is that for less critical work you can print larger. I've never printed this large at base ISO, so my max was 11x17" and it looked great. What is the largest that you've printed with the k5?
Thanks to everyone for your input and help. Now I want both camera's.
I guess I will start looking for a used K1 to start and go from there.
So then the debate is which lens the 24-70 or the 28-105, there are always decisions

The K-5 used to be my main camera until I upgraded to the K-1. The K-1 excels at astro and landscape. The K-3ii can certainly do astro and landscape, but it tends to be better for action and wildlife.

The K-1, compared to the K-3, offers less noise, higher dynamic range, more resolution for wide targets, and the minor feature of on-body lights but I still prefer to use a headlamp to see. The K-3ii provides higher resolution for small targets because the 24mp are concentrated into a smaller area than on the K-1, faster burst speed, and a more compact body.

Lens choice for the K-1: f2.8 or faster doesn't get used for many landscapes but it is important for astro. Your options for astro and landscape usage include:
  • Just 24-70: Get that as your all purpose lens if you don't expect to ever need wider than 24mm. 24/2.8 is an okay combination for the Milky Way.
  • 28-105 plus 15-30. The 15-30 lets you go way wider than just the 24-70, and provides the f2.8 for astro.
  • 28-105 plus a prime like Samyang/Rokinon 24/1.4 or 20/1.8. The Samyang primes are even faster than f2.8. Compared to the 15-30, the Milky Way will be brighter, but you lose the flexibility of zoom and autofocus. These primes and others offer more affordable filters than the 15-30.

(By "astro" I assume you mean relatively wide shots of the Milky Way, constellations, etc. using typical camera lenses. DSLRs do well with that. If you want to photograph small targets such as planets, star clusters, or galaxies through a large telescope, consider a dedicated astro camera rather than DSLR or mirrorless.)

Your 16-85 plus K-5 acts like a 24-130 in K-1 terms. If 16mm on your K-5 is adequately wide, and you don't need the 85 end much, then the 24-70 sounds great for you. If you want wider, or need the full 16-85 today, you will likely need 2 or more lenses. That's how LBA (lens buying addiction) progresses

Perhaps this chart that I found could be of help:

Field-of-view (also known as FOV)

FOV Tables: Field-of-view of lenses by focal length

The values for Field of View (FOV) come up frequently enough at the forums that I thought a list might be helpful for quick reference.
Remember that focal length is stated for infinity and most lenses decrease in focal length as you focus closer.

this table can help you determine how lenses of a certain focal length gives a different field of view depending on whether they are mounted on a full frame camera body [ K 1 or Pentax Film camera body ( data on the left ) ] or an APS-C smaller filter [ K 3 II ( data in the middle ) ]

I simply write one - price. When I use K3 II real difference now is only low light situation when higher ISO it will be usefull. Except that I don't see big difference on real use. Crop get another zoom for telephoto what is plus and make macros easier.
