Does serial number database also facilitate camera retrieval after theft?

About eight years ago, someone stole my Pentax camera. Afterward, I registered my camera's serial number in the database. Just wondering, how useful is the database for theft prevention?

We've had at least one instance in which a stolen serial showed up on ebay. But it does require cooperation between the parties involved.

Now that I think of it, though, it might be nice for us to build a one click tool to check if a serial number is listed as stolen.

That would be a nice feature and would be very nice for lenses also.

This wouldnt do a thing for theft prevention. However....it could be extremely beneficial for theft recovery.
I would like to see a data base for such. +1

Lenstag also seems useful, though it would be even better if there were a system for checking serial numbers of recovered stolen cameras. I wonder how aware law enforcement agencies (internationally) are about Pentaxforums, Lenstag and other serial number databases. Wouldn't cost them much to run a quick search when they recover a camera.
