If I had to stay within the 5000 budget: K-1 with DFA 28-105, FA 31, DFA 50, FA 135, DA 300. It could be done by buying mostly used.

I would order the 15-30, the new 50mm, and the DFA 70-200. Then I would order a DFA 100mm macro. Then maybe another K-1 body, because who likes to swap lenses right?

But NOT the one I want ! You beat me to it....645Z !
I would even be happy to settle for a low mileage 645D with a few lenses.

Great answers so far, folks! Some expected, but some curve-balls too!

I ought to show my own hand, so here goes:

Believe it or not, I'm actually really happy with the gear I have. That doesn't mean I don't want more, of course But I like what I have to work with, and it suits me. My only real concern is that, in time, what I'm happy with suddenly might not be available to me due to equipment failure. As such, some of my budget is dedicated to insurance...

Bodies:

Despite its age and obsolescence, my absolute favourite camera to shoot with is the humble 10 megapickle Samsung GX10 (same as the Pentax K10D). If I had to sell all of my cameras and keep just one, it would be this. I like its simplicity, and I love the quality of RAW files it produces. Resolution is, of course, very limited compared to modern cameras - but for me, it's not limiting, and I'll happily sacrifice resolution for the tonal response of that lovely CCD sensor. I already have two GX10s, both bought as mint low-shutter-count examples. One is still below average for its age, and the other remains as I bought it. I want to stockpile more so that they'll outlast me (!), but I backed myself into a corner with my terms & conditions - I can't buy Samsung branded cameras, right? So, I'm going to eBay, Gumtree, and any other source available to find myself two Pentax K10D bodies with low shutter count. Typical asking price here in the UK is around GBP £150 (a little more than the Samsung version), so GBP £300 for two really nice, lightly-used copies.

Fast-forwarding to more recent technology (if not exactly state-of-the-art), I already have a K-3 and K-3II, and love them both. My K-3 has seen plenty of use, but my K-3II is barely "broken in". So, I'm going to buy another brand-new K-3II while they're still available. Coupled with my existing K-3II, that should last me many years. Current price for remaining UK stocks is just under GBP £800, which is almost 30% more than I paid for my existing copy... but my budget is time-limited, and I like the camera, so that's the way it has to be. GBP £800 - ker-ching!

Lenses:

Similar to my preferred bodies, my favourite lens is the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. So long as I'm shooting APS-C K-mount, I really, really don't want to be without a good copy of that lens, so I'm going to buy a second one. They're becoming scarce to buy new, and prices are unreasonable, so I guess I'll have to find a decent used copy. I'm allowing GBP £250 for that, which is probably a bit more than necessary - but I only have a month to get one

I have the Tamron 150-600 in Sony A-mount that I use on full frame. I don't use it very often - certainly not as much as I should. But I have good intentions to change that, especially with the wildfowl parks that we have nearby. So I'd like a decent equivalent to use on my Pentax and compatible APS-C gear. The D FA150-450 is GBP £1,600 here in the UK right now. I'll have one of those, please!

I love my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Art, which was inexpensive and produces much nicer images than I could have hoped for. The AF is also much better than expected, given some of the dreadful reviews. But I'd really like the Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG HSM, which I know is in a different class optically. It's currently GBP £650 in the UK. The price has dropped lower on occasion, but I only have a month to act, so I'll take it.

Accessories:

I have a decent Giottos tripod that I bought maybe seven or eight years ago. It's really good quality, but my, it's heavy. I want a good quality carbon-fibre tripod that I won't leave behind because of the weight. I'm budgeting GBP £250 for such a beast.

I'm up to GBP £3,850... and I'm going to stop there. That leaves me with £150 for minor price variations, or for a couple of silly accessories that may or may not be essential, but might be fun. And, per the intention of this thread, we must never forget the fun

EDIT: With the exception of my GX10 / K10D obsession, I reserve the right to change any and all choices at any time preceding receipt of the USD $5K...

I'd love to splurge on a 67ii + 105/2.4, the 90LS and the 75mm shift lens. Plus, bunch of film. If I found a copy a little cheaper than current prices, I'd love to add the 800/4 to the list but I'd probably need a new tripod as well. I can't decide if I want to do film again though, and if I do, I can't decide if I want to do 67... but if it has to be Pentax branded then my large format stuff is out of the running anyway.

Maybe more realistically, I'm pretty happy with the K-1 and lenses I have, though I could always get more... <checks B&H wishlist> I'd probably get the SLR magic anamorphot-65 to take 16x9 native format (can't manage to justify buying one for "sounds super cool" but if we're blowing 5k for fun...), a new tripod that is taller and heavier duty (my current is great but it was a tradeoff between stiffness and weight for backpacking), a studio strobe kit (something with very short flash duration sounds nice, the Astral Extreme is on my list but I'd want to re-research it, there's been a number of new strobes released in the past couple years), the 15-30 plus a 150mm filter system for it with polarizer, ND, ND soft/hard, etc. Pretty sure that gets me close to 5K, if there's extra, then a second K-1 body or the 77LTD, but I do a lot of hiking where I want WR so not sure on the LTDs.

I'd start by searching for current prices on the 250-600/5.6 and 600/4. Assuming those were too expensive, I would then look at Sigma 500/4.5 or 300/2.8 plus 2x TC.

Used prices for Canon and Nikon fast telephotos tend to be much lower than for Pentax. I would consider those for a 2nd system for wildlife.

I would also search for the old Pentax 125 telescope. Not AF so tricky for wildlife, but superb for astrophotography.

I'd sell some of my own gear back to me and go on a holiday with the proceeds. One gets creative in retirement (secret cash stashes are hard to make happen these days.... and you can't have stuff delivered to work).

Easy one the 800mm 6x7 telephoto to give me the extra reach over my 600mm, the ED elements in the 800mm would be nice as well. Naturally the matched teleconverter and hard case would have to go with it. Fortunately I have all the converters to go from 6x7 to K to Q mount. This would naturally require a tripod permanently mounted in a tonne of concrete to stabilise the shake on the Q. I think that is good value as I could use the lens on 4 different Pentax formats.

Remember, folks - per the original Ts & Cs, $5000 is not your limit... you can top up those funds with your own, if you so wish

I currently have a K-30 {beginning to come down with the dreaded Dark Image Syndrome} and three lenses: Sigma 10-20mm, DA 18-135, DA 55-300mm ED WR.

I believe I can make myself happy with mere $1300 extra expenditure ..... for a KP {silver} and the PLM version of the 55-300mm lens.

However, if I had $5000 that I had to "use or lose", I could spend the "extra" $3700 too

K-1 + 28-105mm lens and DFA 15-30 would take up most of that, and I would spend the remainder on the little stuff I don't feel like adding up right now - new memory card for the K-1, new bag for the K-1, etc.

This would give me two camera systems that can operate in the 15-105mm range {"effective 35mm"} and the KP that could handle the longer needs.

I briefly considered dropping some of this stuff to fit in the 150-450mm lens, but quite honestly, I'm not sure I want to lug that around with me.
