So... I was encouraged to grade the responses.

No good can come from this if I try to do it seriously, or too individually I'd say all the responses were good, but that would be dismissed as an easy get-out. I will at least say that I appreciated all the responses, and whoever wins the next K-1 / K-1II will appreciate them too

So, firstly, full marks for everyone that stuck specifically to the rules, as follows:

You're given USD $5,000 (approximately GBP £4,000, AUD $6,800, or equivalent in your local currency)... but you have to spend it within one month (or you lose it), on any or all of the following:

- Pentax-branded camera body or bodies - new or used, digital or film
- K, M42, Q, 645 or adaptable-mount lens(es) - any brand, new or used
- Accessories of any type - remotes, lighting and modifiers, tripods, filters, adapters etc.

The budget can be topped up with your own funds if it's insufficient. You can only choose equipment that is currently available in the new or used market (no waiting for planned or fictional yet-to-be-released products ).

Remember - you must spend it all in a month, or you lose it....
Extra marks go to those who chose exactly what I chose - which is no-one but me. Of course, it's my thread, so I get to set such unrealistic expectations

Special award for those who blew the budget entirely. I'm looking at you, @normhead - $25K? You should be in Vegas, not wasting your time with photography Just slightly fewer extra marks for those that suggested the budget "wasn't much" to work with (or words to that effect). Further-reduced (but worthwhile) extra marks for anyone who at least blew the budget to some extent, suggesting they'd pull money out of their own pockets to make it work. Ricoh Imaging loves you all

Special mention for Jonathan Mac who not only has the budget allocated, but would spend it within two days. Nice

You good folks will have to judge yourselves, I'm afraid...

But if Norm is actually prepared to show us the fibre of his fabric with that $25k commitment, I might just have to award him 1st place, in the BLING stakes at least - even though I know he'll be unbearable after this award

Are we done already?

Because if the question had included a condition of starting from scratch with $5,000 to burn...

It didn't disclude it.

Go to the back of the class, and write a hundred lines: "I must spend the $5,000 dollars any way I wish within the rules" !!!

Ok, of I should start from scratch... Of course, $5k wouldn't be nearly enough But a bare minimum would be something like:

- K-1 and DFA 28-105 as a compact base kit.
- A20/2.8 since there's no modern small wide angle prime available.
- The three FA Limiteds, no qualification needed
- DFA 100 WR Macro, excellent macro and fast moderate tele lens.
- Sigma 100-300/4 and TC, although if Ricoh would make a tele zoom along the lines of the 28-105 I would be all over it!
- An ultra wide fisheye - the DA 10-17 is a good candidate.
- A sturdy tripod

Yep, that could be a good kit to start out with

My tastes are quite pedestrian. If I were starting "from scratch" I'd just have to throw in a few dollars of my own to purchase the Sigma 10-20mm and DA 18-135 that I was planning to bring forward from my current kit. Those really are my taste - I really don't want or need anything beyond that to keep me happy. As long as I have the capability to take the pictures I want .... I really don't care if I'm not extravagant enough for Mike. {pleasing him is not one of my goals}

That's not that much with the new dfa lenses lol) but, DFA 50 1.4, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8 and the upcoming 85 1.4 would leave me completely satisfied with my life plus I can sell few lenses from my holster, and get a set of filters for the 15-30)

Sure, if I should be sensible my kit would be something like a K3 or KP with a 16-85 and a 55-300, and some DA Limiteds, say 15, 40, and 70 - plus a 100 macro.

But I'm not sensible - or else I wouldn't already own a K-1

And I always aim to please Mike

Oh yes.

I don't know how much they cost but the last time I was there they still have several on the shelf. If they were beyond the budget then I'd go for a used one.

Five grand won't get me a 645Z system, but ….

645D secondhand - $2500
New DFA 55mm f2.8 - $1000
Used A 35mm f23.5 - $500
Used FA 120mm f4 Macro - $500

and enough left over for $500 worth of future Pentax Forums Site Supporter renewals … mission accomplished!

Pentax K1 - 1500
Sony A7II - 1000

And the remaining 2500 will be spent in Takumars, Ks and Ms... and some soviet and german oldies... and some exotic lenses for the A7II... and... game over.
