falconeye, your technique looks easy enough to run as a batch process in XnView. I'll try it when I get a chance.

Beside pixel peeping or just using one frame/shot out of the sequence for say a DVD case cover, do you actually notice the quality difference in the running sequence? I'd expect the viewer to be too busy following the motion to notice the botched resampling.

Dan.

This will depend on the subject. I discovered it while watching the fireengine movie. I found it disturbing. A subject with less contrast would be more forgiving. The fireengine has bold written letters printed on it...

And if you use Photoshop to combine frames into an MP4 movie, an extra action to get rid of it is just a mouseclick away

- So very true! First one was made in ideal conditions, medium white room, well and uniform lit, with people at 2-4 meters moving normal (slow). Almost no PF and no jaggies, Kunzite saw it. Later after jelly test I wanted to try some usual urban landscape, see attachment. I increased contrast and sharpness to counter the dull light, but the result is far from pleasant; huge PF and jaggies everywhere, better try next time with NR hard (it's not for that, but...) and low contrast and sharpness. I use KMplayer (kmp_1431.exe), has frame by frame at "F" and zoom at + -, space play/stop. At few frame once you can see that some PF are gone (bottom windows) when catching a reading vertical row (confused).
Had to delete jelly one, if someone need it, PM for it.

The 21 fps images are captured at 768x1024 internally (XGA).
This means that a 6x3 sensor cell matrix (18 cells) are mapped into a single pixel.
The Bayer pattern is of this matrix is like
RGRGRG
GBGBGB
RGRGRG
If Pentax now "picks" 3 colors out of this array by just reading, say, the 1st, 7th, 13th cell (the most simple algorithm possible), then the distance between R and B colors is large and with a contrast border between them, you must get fringe. Note that you only get fringe in horizontal direction and that lens resolution provides for sharp contrast boundaries within the 6x3 cell matrix.

The simple fix for this would be to only sample, say, the 1st, 7th, 8th cell which are all close together. A firmware upgrade which can be programmed within an hour.

The really nasty thing is that Pentax doesn't care and that despite all Pentax user forums, nobody at Pentax Japan ever cares to listen.
