HD PENTAX D FA 150 to 450mm ED DC AW Lens with K3 camera

To get a feeling how the K-3 shake reduction performs with the HD PENTAX D FA 150 to 450mm ED DC AW Lens what minimum shutter speeds with sharp images can users achieve at the 450mm end when using hand held. Also similarly with monopod and tripod support when shooting static objects. Looking forward to users feedback.

Well everybody’s physical capabilities are different so so I’m guessing you will get a wide range of speeds for hand held shooting.

For tripod shooting turning off shake reduction seems to be the preferred method.

I'm using the D FA 150-450 on my K-3ii. When using it handheld I need 1/500s or faster to get sharp results; I'd typically go with the rule of double focal length (1/800- 1/1000 s). Checking exif of recently taken pictures: the slowest speed is 1/250s, but that the exception to the rule. With the lens as heavy and big as it is, my hand and arm can hold it steadliy only for a short time.

With a tripod I went up to 30 s with no problem - no experience with a monopod so far.

I use my Sigma 150-500 DG OS with my K-3 II. If I am shooting moving objects naturally I am going to use a suitable shutter speed to accommodate the speed at which the subject is moving (examples: 250-320 for bird on branch, 400 for bird in moving waeter, 800 for slow flightt of bird like Blue Heron, 1000 for Osprey or Seagulls in normal flight, and 1250 or more for Osprey hunting). The F stop you use is going to also determine what is going to be enough depth for detail of the subject, depending on its size. I would recommend F8 or higher F stop number if shooting the lens fully extended at 450, depending on subject size and what you want to include in the image.

Shutter speed on the above shot was 1/180, shot handheld at 450mm focal length on a K3.
