Yeah. I don't recall how many exposures, probably 18 or so.

Thank you. I blame the lens. It's a really good one.

It's probably just some random 50mm he threw on the camera... Still, it looks pretty sharp...

(Sorry, Bill - I couldn't resist )

You can even get a great 3d effect out of the humble 18-55. Taken today:

That's because the kit lens has very good contrast, it's great for b/w! Maybe it's underexposing.

I think we take on board cues from dof a lot more subtly than we realise to see 3D. In other words we use slight changes in sharpness to augment the stereo purpose of having two eyes much more than we realise. I use smart sharpening a lot (edge sharpening) and the Gimp process I use gives me options to not sharpen areas. This is a great way to gain a bit of 3D pop. I don't think it is the sharpest lenses that lend themselves to this but rather the slightly softer ones like the M40 2.8. which responds well to the sharpening process.

The other thing besides sharpness, is how well the lens portrays slight changes in color contrast.f I forget what f stop this was at, probably between 1.4 and 2.8 , but the thing that makes it work are the colors not sharpness. Clicking on the image and viewing full screen of Flickr really shows what I mean.

You want 3D pop? You REALLY want 3D pop? It doesn't get any more pop-ish than this.

I read a page talking about how many modern lenses have too many corrective elements, which sacrifices depth for sharpness. I was wondering about this in relation to my 16-85mm (16 elements) compared to the 20-40mm (9). I have certainly felt that the 16-85 can look a bit flat and boring in some situations, so I got the 20-40mm and sure enough it has more 3D depth. However, I realised that my A35-105mm has 15 elements and has incredible pop. Kinda blows that theory.

I do think that there must be design factors which give some lenses 3D pop. My lens collection has tended towards these. The SMC 40mm lim, 77mm lim, are great, as is the 20-40mm. The 15mm lim has lots of pop although possibly due to perspective and punchy colours more than anything else. But I have to say for some reason it’s the older lenses that really give the best "walk into the picture" 3D effect. The 35-105 as mentioned is my best 3D zoom, but also the 50mm 1.7, and the tip top 3D kings the Takumar 35mm 3.5 and the (8 element not 7!) Super Tak 50 1.4. Oh aye, you want 3D? Can’t beat a Tak.
