If EV comp is turned on (custom menu - my K10D is packed up hoping for a new owner) the camera is going to assume you don't know what you're doing and will do its logic circuits level best to make that "bad shot" into a "good shot". And if you're using off-camera flash (possibly on-camera too?) that most likely will muck things up.
