Using film-era AF lenses on digital bodies

Mods: feel free to move this if I've picked the wrong forum.

I've been in the process of selling off lots of camera gear, not just my Pentax stuff. Amongst the Pentax lenses I sold through this site was a lovely FA 1.4/85mm lens that worked perfectly on my SF-10/SF-1/SF-1n/PZ-1 and MZ-S. The buyer reported back that it was broken and would not work on his cameras. It has returned to me, he has his refund, and it still works fine on my SF-1 (the other bodies are now sold). Apparently he tried it on K-1ii and KP cameras without success either in AF or MF modes. I'm hesitant to re-list it for sale as I don't want someone else to buy it and have the same problem. Are there compatibility issues for these older lenses and newer bodies?

Shouldn't be. I tried an old 50mm F2 on the K1-II not too long ago. Worked fine.

I regularly use old Pentax and third-party lenses on my K1 with no issues functionally.

What were the ‘symptoms’? Did they not work at all or were there specific problems related to AF or exposure?

If someone new to Pentax who had only used DFA or DA lenses said an FA lens wasn’t working, I’d check the aperture ring was set to A, for example, and that their camera was set to ‘allow aperture ring’.

Without more details, it’s hard to know if the lens has issues, their camera has issues, or if it’s an operator error...

Yup, there aren't any compatibility issues in general, though very small connectivity issues with the mount might cause issues on certain bodies. Perhaps this was the case for your buyer.

Did the buyer know how to engage AF on the lens? Was aperture ring set to “A” when they tried MF?
I cannot think of anything else if the lens works for you.
I use a FA*24 on my K-1 with no problems whatsoever.

I've a similar complaint on the F* 300 it was user error. The user had no idea how the focus collar worked. Also the A setting on aperture ring.

I have used my FA*85mm lens with my K-1 and MZ-S.
Auto-Focus works just fine.

Yep, FA*85mm works a treat on the K-1. But the clutch for A/F to Manual is tricky if you do not know how it works.

Here is what the purchaser wrote to me:

QuoteQuote:
Bad news The lens arrived today and looked fine. However it will not focus. I am familiar with the clutch on these lenses and it will not focus when set to manual or when set to autofocus. When set to autofocus the manual focus ring will not turn (that is normal). When the clutch is set to manual the focus ring will turn but the lens does not focus - nothing happens. The distance scale does not move.

FA* 85/1.4 works for me without any issues in any mode. One of my favorite lenses.

There should be no compatibility issue

You say it works fine with your film camera. Did you develop the film and print the result ?

You should contact the buyer again and get an explanation of exactly what did not work

User error. One might ask if they were using the lens on a Pentax camera.

Indeed, looks fine to me. The buyer needs to explain what the problem is.
