It's a substantial step up. The improvements are well-documented in our in-depth review. You might also want to check out the K-70 review, as the KP has roughly the same image quality.

I move from K5 to KP and I saw a major improvement in AF and others. K50 being a lower, you should see more improvement

Yes the step is a big one. Low light results are vastly superior, autofocus is faster, it has hdr that actually works and is available in raw, etc, etc. I really love the tilting screen, it makes using a tripod at different levels so easy. Check out the camera comparison page, although some of those items that may not look that much different are actually huge improvements.

The K50 has an AA filter doesn't it? I think the KP has better image quality but is a bit less forgiving of lenses due to the sensor's acuity.

The main things I appreciate in the KP over the K50 are:
Better manual controls
Tilt Screen
Quieter Shutter
Electronic Shutter
Ricoh Edge Peaking (this is amazing)
Somewhat better AF-S
More Megapixels: More scope to crop

Things I like about the K50:
Smaller and Lighter
More conventional grip can be nice

Another vote for at least checking out the K70, I "upgraded" from a K-5 to a K70 and the image quality improvement is substantial! As you're already used to the more compact body of the K-50, the K70 should feel quite familiar to you.

I think the question you need to ask yourself is whether or not the significantly higher price of the KP (over the K-70) gives you features and build-quality that you need if your main parameter is image quality.

Whatever your choice ... enjoy

I concur with all the comments made thus far, but would add, I also have a K-50 I've been using for the past four years or so, and just bought a KP (selling for about eight hundred bucks, now - maybe Ricoh's going to come out with a "mark two" version soon?). The biggest difference, to me, is the fact that the sensor's got half-again the resolution (i.e., pixels per square unit of surface area). Fantastic camera; and works well with both APS-C and full-frame lenses. It uses the same batteries as the K-50 (though it gets nowhere near the same "battery life" - so you might want to look into the BG-7 grip as well).
Go buy that camera!!!

Put it this way: after a few weeks with the KP, I gave my K-50 to one of my kids.
