Ideas for the ideal Pentax FF DSLR.

After lurking about the forums for a while and seeing what people want from a future full-frame Pentax model, I have messed about on Photoshop and some K-1 promo images and made a concept for the "ideal" K-1 successor.

Visually, it's not much different to the K-1 (that camera is probably one of the most well thought out cameras I have used and am grateful to own) and most of the changes are based on the nitpicking I've seen while lurking and general improvements to the internals to kind of "catch-up" with the competing brands without being overly excessive.

It would be cool to hear what you guys think of this!

800 g is 800 heavier than the lightest Sony, not good enough.

I am cackling at the USB-C triple port (are those UHS-II as well? ), it's brilliant. You forgot the Eye Detect AF on the VF, which will be an OVF but with three color histograms, focus peaking and magnification.

Good idea. Also in the marketing role, just to see if the $3500 price would break even with 15% of the available Pentax customer base willing to buy at that price.

I like that idea especially for external power as it makes things so much easier.

800g - 800(g?) = 0g. Not sure which Sony model weighs 0g. Then again, 0g of Sony is probably the ideal amount;
I'm on board with that.

I would eliminate video I know its the "future" but I would rather have better AF and an even faster frame rate than video and I think eliminating video would free up resources and maybe even save some space that could be packed with more still photography features my 2 cents anyway

The cover will still block the signal and the holes won’t be weather sealed. A polycarbonate top cover isn’t detrimental to the durability of the camera except as an intellectual exercise.

Nice thoughts and image.
  • I also don‘t like the old fashioned special connector ports. Possibility of charging a changeable battery in camera and support for attaching a powerbank and very fast data transfer would be great. So USB-C would be a good option.
  • Until now I‘m not a strong video user. But I’d like to capture some videos directly with a MacBook Pro and think about getting a panasonic to get clean video output. A K-1 successor with widely configurable and clean video output up to FullHD 60p or even 120p would be very interesting. If FullHD implementation shows great image quality there is no need for 4K video IMO. But what do I know - I‘m not a pro
  • In addition I‘d like to see 4:3 and 16:9 overlay modes in the viewfinder and live view.
  • And wouldn‘t it be great if the sensor could be read out exactly for the chosen ratio and put into raw files when saving the capture (saving lots of memory space)?
  • What I also would like to see is some kind of „containers“ for storing raw captures that belong together like we get it with HDR. This would support panorama and focus stacking projects by example.

Yes, I think besides some hardware updates some software updates could also be nice value.
