I'm probably not buying until I hit 150,000 shutter actuations on my K-3, I'm currently at about 130,000.

But I'll still b looking for the accelerator chip.
The flip out back screen.
A 50 shot buffer.
10 FPS
better AF.
And faster buffer clearing

Without even one of those things I'll just go for a K-P.

I’d be looking to move on my K-3 (my current camera is a K-1) if the new APS-C body conforms with the requirements Norm has outlined. I may not sell it (I have a growing herd of grand-children who are at the age when they are starting to take an interest).

I said for years there was no way I would give up my K200D.
And I meant it.
Then, one day, some time back, the K-P went on serious sale. And...
I purchased one.
The K200D went to a new home.
And...every day that I use it, I'm amazed not at all the cool things the K-P can do (though it can), but, rather, at all the thoughtful little touches which the K-P designers incorporated into the camera.

I haven't seen anything since - including the specs on the new so-called flagship APS-C model, which remotely come close to the fun of not just shooting with the K-P....but enjoying it.

That's the long answer.
The short answer is: NO. I will most definitely not sell my current camera.

You just described the Nikon D500, which has been around for over three years. I hope Pentax can bring something to the table which is better in some respects than this camera (which I owned, and it had really good IQ).

I expect my K-3 to last quite a while longer and I wouldn't expect the new APS-C flagship to trump it by much in any area, especially in IQ as I imagine it'll use the new 26MP chip. My K-3 will be fine years old in January at which point I'll have used it as long as I did the K200D, and it's still going strong.

If switching to Nikon it will be a D850. Everything in one body.

That is exactly what I did. I sold the D500 to finance the purchase of a D850, though it was larger and heavier. I have since sold the D850, as I don't need 45 megapixels any more, and I have a K-1 to take care of my higher Mpx needs. I also have a K-3 II, so I will be looking with interest at the new camera when it appears.

After doing these comparisons, I'm even questioning the value of my K-1. But I keep it for high dynamic range situations. If there was an APS_c sensor say 24-28 MP with the same DR, it would probably be gone in a flash. Weight is becoming increasingly hard for me to handle.

I'm having trouble figuring out what it is hi-res does for me.

If nothing else, hi-res provides many more opportunities at cropping.

At higher ISO values, the KP already has better IQ - better noise but especially better color fidelity - than the D500 has.

That's problematic.
Here's how I think of it.
The K-1 with 36 MP has more crop room, but you need a longer lens to take advantage of that. A K-1 provides 15 MP cropped.
The K-3 puts 24 MP in the same area the K-1 puts 15.

So if you crop to APS-c with K1 you are actually getting 1/3 less resolution than you would from the same area with a K-3. You can crop more, but you may end up getting less resolution.

Look at the 1 inch Panasoni FZ 1000 that will produce the same resolution as K-3 on a one inch sensor, and you can get can get double the resolution of a K-1 in crop mode incorporated made with a sensor half the size.

For landscape you get more resolution with a K-1 and a zoom lens as long as you don't need a telephoto. For wildlife, where typically you have to crop, you get more resolution from a K-3 using the same lens. Or you have to buy a bigger heavier more expensive lens for you K-1.
