The write protect/read-only tab does nothing when using an adapter.
Sorry, you're wrong. Write protect is a function of the socket/slot not the card. The 'switch' on the card operates a set of contacts in the socket/slot.

Have you tried it? I've tried 2 different Sandisk adapters and microSD cards in various devices. All of them do not report the card as read-only and update the card.

...and not all devices respect the write protect feature.

Better still, I have disassembled cards and sockets and therefore know how it works.

SDXC versus Micro SDXC cards
May I ask why one would choose to use adapted Micro cards over the regular SD cards? The concerns are well known (extra layer of contacts present opportunity for capacitance issues as well as additional resistance) as are the success stories, so there is not use going into those here.

My Galaxy S5 requires removal of the back and battery to access the micro-sd slot and even then, the slot is already occupied by the card I use for photos.

Edit: I might also add that the insert/removal of the card on that phone is a delicate operation. Apparently, the intent was that the operation not be frequent.

The write protect works on my Lexar card when I bumped it before re-inserting it into my K-5IIs. I ha\ve had bad adapters before though so I certainly would not count on an untested one if I was going out to shoot. That would be as bad as forgetting to put the card back into the camera after downloading the images from the previous day! (Woops! I have done it more than once. )

The phones I use right now all have externally accessible slots but typically require powering down first. (combined SIM/SD card slot.)

When used with the SD adapter* that comes with the card.

Fair enough. At current market prices for SDXC (UHS-1), I will pass.

Steve

* At least that is what it says on the front of my SanDisk SD Adapter.

re: write protect

Huh, must be something with the adapters. They came with the micro cards which I confirmed with Sandisk as being genuine/authentic. The tabs move fine and appear to be the same dimensions as my SD cards.

All the more reason not to trust the adapters.

This is the card slot in a K-x, the contacts in the middle of the photo are the write protect switch.

When the plastic 'switch' on the card/adapter is in the write protect position (or removed completely) the switch is not closed and write protect is enabled.
