From the article, "So there’s one thought for you; if the gear hasn’t been touched or breathed on in 24 hours, it’s almost certainly safe; at 72 hours, you can take off the almost."

So, when buying used equipment, have the item shipped via the slowest route.

I just put my most recent acquisitions in a sealed bag with three Kodak Aero Ektar* lenses and a 50mm Takumar. Everything should be fine after a few days.

* Yes, the famously radioactive ones. They average about 1.3 microsievert / hour radiation level @ 30cm.

This is THE best supporting reason to own many lenses and camera bodies.... so they can be rested between uses so the viruses die. I read something about 9 days.... so I need 9 cameras. Sandy must have known this all along.

As for the gear, UV light is an effective way to kill off bacteria and viruses. A disadvantage is that it will accellerate the aging of plastics (sticky grips).

Sterile environment is not good for your immunity.

Too much disinfection leads to more dangerous and resistant bacteria and viruses (exactly the problem some hospitals are fighting with).

How much uv? Air cleaners with uv lights built in have been shown to not being effective against this virus. On cardboard the virus can live for hours. On hard materials it has the potential for several days. In health care offices, hospitals, etc. The best thing we can use are wipes or sprays that are designated as anti-viral. Problem is trying to wipe everything down that the virus may have contacted.
