It was the pump house for a tin mine. In its working days it would have been completely filled by the beam engine that powered the pumps to keep the shafts and tunnels dry. Until the early 20th Century some parts of Dartmoor were a surprisingly industrial landscape and there are still some relics of those days around. Actually, the modern value of rare earth metals is getting to the point where mining could become profitable again, but understandably there's a lot of opposition to that happening inside the national park.
Wheal Betsy is a listed monument owned by the National Trust, so it should stay well preserved for future generations to visit.
On the CCD front, I grabbed a charity shop find Canon Powershot A560 today just for fun. I'll put CHDK on it and post some results when I've got some.
