It's a shame Cybershots don't have the same hacks to allow raws. My Sony DSC-H20 is quite a good camera in good light (and sometimes not so good light ).

Same with the old Pentax CCD compacts. I think my Optio W30 might possibly produce some excellent results if only there was a way to get raw files out of it. The jpeg colours are beautiful but they tend to be over-smoothed, and I think with modern denoising software it could do great things.

Actually, I wish raw had been a menu option in all the old compacts by all manufacturers. I don't care that there's no ram buffer so saving a raw file could take six seconds. I'm willing to wait.

I suppose they might also have left raw out as an option because they didn't want users to see how bad the underlying lenses and sensors sometimes (often) were, and how much of the jpeg quality was down to the firmware processing. Perhaps it's the same nowadays with smartphones? I don't know because I refuse to own one.

Six seconds seems very optimistic to me! I'm afraid we'd probably looking at something closer to 60 seconds. Takes 56 to save one TIFF on my ancient P&S from 2002, and it was at least 30 for one RAW on my PowerShot SX160 running CHDK, which is a much more recent camera. So slow that I didn't want to bother with it any longer in fact.

My Powershot A1200 (12 megapixels) took about six seconds saving a CHDK raw file, while the A560 (7 mp) takes only a second or two. I'm entirely comfortable with that amount of time lag although I know that many wouldn't be.

But yep, a whole minute would be too much to live with even for me. And I enjoy messing around with cheap, crappy old cameras so much that I'll forgive them almost anything.

Interesting, my Canon's CPU must be particularly weak-chested then. With the stock firmware, it takes a good three seconds or so to save a full-res JPG. With screen blackout of course. I suppose not all PowerShots are created equal?

I'll take it back then, sorry for the confusion.

For weeks I've wanted to post some comparisons between pictures from the D80 and the K10D using the same lens but many things had happened lately.

Here are the first pictures. Both cameras with the Sigma 17-70C, using Silkypix which uses the same color profile for all cameras by default, no editing, straight raw conversion.

1 - Nikon D80

2 - Pentax K10D

And now the versions with white balance set to Daylight

3 - Nikon D80 Daylight

4 - Pentax K10D Daylight

Colors are different even with the same lens and white balance.

I mean processing can only polish a turd so much. Either it's decent or it isn't. I noticed with the powershot the only thing it was really correcting was some fringing, distortion and noise suppression (while adding a crap ton of sharpening ).

Once it's set to daylight I like the K10D better.

I have to say these look very nice. Yet another 1/2.5" Canon camera that takes great pictures.
