Hit the trails this morning for a short walk. Stopped a moment to admire the stream that runs alongside the trail and about a foot off the trail there was an explosion of Feathers as a female Mallard took flight in a hurry... I could see it warily watching me way upstream. Had a hunch she had a nest nearby and sure enough literally a foot off the trail....

Mallard Nest/eggs

The trail I was on was very much off the beaten path and heavily over grown . I was probably the first one through there since she made her nest. I snapped a few pics and moved on.

I wasn't sure when I saw this frog if the brown coloring was a sign of poor health, but on looking them up found that they do range in color from green to brown. I did also read that the green frogs can go brown from lack of sunlight. I saw several of these last summer that were all green in the yard, but couldn't say whether this one was naturally colored or just not taking in enough sun. Apparently they are native to an 800 or so km stretch of the coast here. I particularly like his/her gold flecked eyelid. Pentax Optio A30;

Eastern Cottontail Rabbit

Our resident wild rabbit having dinner in my garden at dusk tonight.. I grow alot of chicory here for various critters we keep, so theres plenty for her as well.

Uncropped image, shes a bit used to me! Shes been a regular here for the last 2 years.

Thought I'd visit the local pond to take some pictures of birds, this one was a decent crop. Upfront, I have never done this so was trying to get used to what shutter speeds and aperture to use.

The Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 is a really nice and surprisingly cheap lens (< 300 Canadian dollars).

Edit : Nikon D200, 200mm, 1/500s, f/4.5, ISO 250

Nice image you put together there.. birds are something I never get tired of photographing!

I see you used a d200. That body is an amazing camera for its cost today and what it can do.. its become one of my all time favorites. I shoot mine all the time..its a joy. If you ever get the chance to pick up a used tamron 200-500 its a great step up in range to your 80-200, can be had cheap and is easily hand holdable. .. great for birding on a budget, imo.
