Thanks for posting this comparison, as I've always wondered how these two camera models would compare given they have the same sensor (AFAIK). It's subjective of course, but I prefer the K10D color rendition. The D80 shots seem over saturated.
You're welcome. I hope to be able to do more comparisons in the near future.

Does Nikon not provide a tool for generating JPG with less saturation???

It tends to be difficult to photographically capture the “ravine-ness” of a place unless it is narrow {or possibly if you can get sufficiently far away to take advantage of the ‘squeezing’ effect of telephoto}

It's on a part of the moor that I don't often visit, but now that I've found it I think I'll have to go back a few times to figure out how to really capture it. I think there's a nice photo in there somewhere with that lone tree up against the rock face at the end, but somehow I'll need to get the side walls into the photo as well to show that it actually is a ravine. I like your idea of trying from further away with a longer lens and I don't think that would have ever occurred to me, so thanks for that one.

Ah well, there's places I've been trying to photograph for twenty years without really capturing them the way I want to yet. Better to travel hopefully, as they say. . .
On further thought, now knowing more about the physical situation also, is there a way to photograph at a distance from below?

The Last Minute Red

nifty fifty (@f/2) on K100D, ISO 200, 1/15s; Developed in Pentax Photo Lab 3 (Ichikawa), rendering about the same tone as SOOC JPEG

UPDATE: I'm very disappointed by the OneDrive embedded images quality. In this case, the picture was killed by the JPEG recompression 10x more, making it blurry and smudgy. If only the compression wasn't so high or why don't they use the better WEBP format? I must find a better service.
Anyway: Here's the intended image. First it displays the same degraded picture as above. Click three dots left up and choose "Show original". What a difference!
