New DL2 for $999?!

I was walking by my local neighborhood Black's Photo store. They usually have some basic Pentax gear in the window. Lately it's been a K20D, K200D and a DA50-200.

Well yesterday I saw a flash of silver trim on one of the Pentax bodies. Thinking that they might have a KM, I went over to take a closer look.

Turns out they are selling the *ist DL2, years after it was produced! And they aren't offering a bargain for "new old stock" either. It's listed at $999 for the body and two-lens kit (18-55 and 50-200.)

Right beside the DL2 is a new K200D with 18-55 for $699 and DA 50-200 for $199. Total price for the same kit as the DL2: $899.

How does this make sense in anyone's world? $100 more for a 2 year old camera with 6mp, no SR, no weather seals, no SDM, no sensor clean, etc. etc. etc.

My local store has an *ist D for ~$1500 (I guess that was the new price). I haven't been by there in a while. I think they rent it out on occasion (or did).

You're right, I guess they're just looking for the right sucker to walk by.

I went to a different Camera Company store yesterday, and I was surprised to see a dS and an A 80-200 slow version (the only Pentax stuff, too).

They wanted $350 for the camera alone :ugh: I would have walked out with it if it was more like $250...

I know what you mean.

But I keep my eye on Black's because it's very indicative of the consumer market. You can see how different cameras are positioned and what (comparitive) value segment they are going for. I also like to test drive cameras there, because most sales people don't know ANYTHING about SLRs, let alone Pentax, so when you ask to try out a body with a lens you've brought along, they leave you alone to play and don't bother you with bafflegab salespeak.

Also, because Black's has a very corporate retail focus, interested in moving units instead of providing service, they will occasionally have good deals when trying to blow out products. When I was shooting Nikon, they made me a great offer on a D70s the moment it was discontinued, and I have also scored some Nikon speedlights for 1/3 of their value because they were clearing out old stock.

I think that's why the $999 price sticker surprised me so much. Black's only carries the current models of anything. So if you find a few boxes of unsold merch in the back of the warehouse, wouldn't you want to blow them out?
