The sensor already moves 3mm on each access to capture individual shots.
3mm does not give you FF. You would need at least 6mm.

Yes, I know. That was why I said we already have 3mm of movement with the K7, K5 and K3. If we get additional locked movements to each of the corners at 4mm x 6mm extended range, we would get a full frame equivalent field of view. Even with old camera technology using 3mm, we would gain a larger image size and wider field of view halfway between Full and ASP-C simply by taking four consecutive corner shots and stitching them together. With the full frame OVF announced, you could easily frame and setup your shot in a single shutter press and have it stitched together in the camera.

"what if Pentax gives us a k-1 style camera that can take digital 6x7 images ?"

A fabulous Pentax 67 III with a new Foveon sensor of 100 Mpx ...
What else ?
😉

Best regards from Italy !

In addition to the space limitation, it seems like you would also bump up against the same motion artifact issues that pixelshift has. Except worse, given bigger sensor movements would need even more shot to shot time. You'd need serious in-camera compute power to address that, if it was even possible.
While it's perhaps an interesting concept to consider whether something like that is feasible, seems highly unlikely as an investment for Pentax and this body. Why wouldn't people just buy a K-1?

Exactly! The smaller image circle is the entire point of APSc now that we have affordable FF sensors.

Actually the point of APS-C for most people is the K3’s speed and high resolving power for cropping. The K1 in crop mode can’t match the reach and resolving power of the K3 for isolating and cropping subjects. The new camera should well surpass that and if the opportunity exists for a uncrop mode for a full frame field of view mode, why not?

What if it's a medium frame sensor in a new gr size body? With a retractable 14-200 f2 lens. Of course weather sealed.

Exactly. Have a FF mode on an aps-c camera using sensor shift would mean it could not be used for flash or any subject where there is movement in the frame. If you want a camera that can do both FF and crop, buy a K1

One of the selling points of full frame is less depth of field. That is a good thing. To some, less (DOF) is more (bokeh). Moving the crop sensor around won't give you this full frame shallow DOF.
Yes, it would, actually, if you think about it. Depth of field has nothing to do with the size of the sensor (or virtual size).

I think what is going on here is a misinterpretation of the information contained in the released video. The newly designed VF is NOT a "full-frame" OVF in the new APS-C body, as far as I was reading it as they spoke in Japanese. The way it came across to me, the new VF is significantly improved in terms of brightness and clarity, as well as in magnification, and in these regards comparable to an excellent FF VF. It was NOT said to provide a FF FOV. Such a thing would be a mismatch, going beyond 100% coverage.

That said, my impression also is that the new camera will present improvements significant enough to close the quality gap between APS-C and FF even more. The mighty little KP has already done a fine job of that, and this may well make that gap very small indeed! I hope the new model will also follow the KP's example in its processor for turning out great images right out of the camera.

No need to change any of the underlying components, just change the EXIF data to output as FF K1. Problem solved

There’s a whole thread somewhere here devoted to Brenizer Method photos, so the concept isn’t without merit, or precedent as a procedure. Having such a feature in-camera would be unique, but I would have thought it would require considerably more processing power than currently available, for the composition to be processed in an acceptable time.

Still, if all the frames could be captured quickly and stored together (like Pixel-shift) for later processing, that might work. A similar development for the K-1 would be interesting.
