I have a K-3 and a D750.

What lenses do you need? Who has them and what’s the price. Are they weather sealed (Both those body’s will be).
Do you need good AF for fast moving things?

Nikon AF is way better, period. Image quality would be great out of both of those.

Pentax has a nice user interface and button setup. Nikon is OK but I prefer Pentax there.

If you want or plan to want long telephoto’s get the Nikon. There is nothing like the 150-600 options for around 800 dollars and up on Pentax.

I have a pentax KP and a Nikon d800, at the end of the day it will all depend on what you want to do with the camera. I have a DA*300 that I use for birding however I became limited with the lack of affordable glass above 300mm, even the Bigma was bricking my KP after sigma refused to update the lens I understood it was time to look for a solution. I bought a tamron 150-600 VR SP for 590 used and a Nikon d800 with 14,000 shots for 714. At the beginning I was frustrated with Nikon menu and other annoyances but I quickly catched up. However no other camera feels like a pentax in the hands. If you want to do stills, landscapes, portraits and you have glass around go with the d800. If you have pentax glass and you don't need a full frame camera get the KP which is a lot of camera for the current price.

Buy new. At least think about a path that allows acquisition of future camera or lens updates new. Electronics last longer in new gear, it is not only the shutter count. I would only buy D800 in case I wanted to go for D850 and certain lenses soon.
Both cameras are so different that basic decisions about price, age, format, lenses should answer the question.

a fair lens with FF sensor will be close to a nice lens with nice crop sensor

I will pick D800.

But, why not both.
I would not sell my Pentax gear for another brand.
I am still using Canon, Fuji, Sigma Camera.

Where did these late replies come from? (No offence meant!)
The OP has either bought one or other of the cameras by now (or taken up a new hobby )

The new hobby is increasing your post count to enter the lens giveaway. Normal service will resume afterwards.

Deep thinking takes time.
And after weeks this conversation is still far upon the list. And now it will be top of the list again.

i use nikon d750 at work since it came out. full frame, no use for it. nikon lenses, expensive. pictures are lifeless, blueish, and cold. and its a heavy camera. the one good thing about it is that you can tweak all the settings as it is a precise instrument and can do iso less than 100. i imagine the d800 is the same.

Yeah, I was never quite satisfied with the built-in JPEG engine as well, but the camera does support more than that. Have you tried some custom Picture Control profiles? Might be worth a shot.

* https://nikonpc.com/ (example photos not fully representative of actual rendering)
* Put on a SD card (NIKON\CUSTOMPC)
* Copy profiles from card to camera via Manage Picture Control or whatever that menu entry is called
* Adjust JPEG sharpness do your liking

I guess you're just using jpegs? I'm assuming most of the people buying pro grade ff cameras are going to use raws.

I never noticed images from the d800 we used in the studio as being "lifeless". Although, I haven't worked with those raws in a while.
