I started off using 35mm film compacts, then digital compacts. My first SLR was a Nikon D40X DSLR, after which I switched to Pentax with the K-7...

A Smena 8M to a Zenit SLR to a Canon point-and-shoot to a Pentax K100D as my first Pentax, then on to the K20, K5 and now the great K-1.

After using a variety of film point and shoots, I began using a K1000 in high school to learn the basics of photography. I had a few more advanced SLRs following that time, but I have no doubt that having to do everything manually with a K1000 slowed me down enough to really compose the scene and take every setting into account, resulting in better images.
First DSLR was a K-5, since it had such great build quality and all the fully manual functions I new I wanted.

Yes, but no - for both options.

I guess I will choose option 2, since I did use Pentax SLRs. But I didn't start with Pentax SLRs.

And it would still be true to choose option 1, because I didn't progress from SLR to DSLR straight away. I ditched film for digital compacts in 2003, and when I got my first DSLR in 2010 it had little to do with it being a Pentax and much to do with the K-5 being the best DSLR at the time. Besides, I didn't really come into photography as my main hobby until I got the K-5

Now, I would be surprised if less than 2/3rds of us go for option 2!
