Favorite body and lens for street photography

Wondering what is your favorite body and lens for street photography. Curious being new if there is a must have lens. Or possibly a specific body thats hard to replicate it's amazing image quality.

Panasonic GX7 with Panasonic 20mm f1.7 or Olympus 17mm f2.8. IF I had a KP and a DA 21 that combo might be my go to. But with the k-3 and the only 20mm-30mm lenses being zoom like the DA 12-24, DA 20-40, DA 18-50, or DA 18-135, or larger primes like an FA 31... I just don’t have a small unobtrusive option until I get to the DA 40. While I do like street portraits and vignettes of scenes with the DA 40, it is a much different look than most people think of for street photography.

Soviet-made FED-2 rangefinder camera with Jupiter-12 35mm f/2.8.

I know...not quite what you are asking about. Truth is that less tech works better for me in that genre.

I would like to have a pentax k1 mk2 but it is not like that and I can only talk about the k5II which I think is very good and the optics that I think are more convenient than the ones I have is the Sigma 17-50 2.8

KP (flip screen for low level, discreet shooting), 21mm limited is excellent because it is tiny and very sharp, great if you plan to get close, if not, one of the AF 35mm. The 2.4 is sharp and cheap, the limited is sharper but dearer. If you want to stay distant and compress the scene, 18-135 or 50-200, both minus the hood to keep things smaller and more discreet

I find myself shooting streets mostly in 135 film. Not coincidentally, as I fix the ISO and most of the times the shutter speed as well. No focus peaking and other technical stuff. It’s relaxing really.

Ricoh GR III, from ILC anything with a lens you like. People were doing street photos with big frame box cameras in beginning of XX century. Be creative and use whatever you like. If I go on the streets I either get P&S or K-50 (my only digital ILC) with 18-55 and set it on 55. I am to shy to get close to people

+1 . There is no "best" gear you can buy for street photography, only the "best" technique, specifically, learning how to use your favorite camera and lens combo so well that you don't have to think much about your settings in order to be able to react to the street scene quickly and get a good image. Having an eye for composition, and the observant attitude within your surroundings, as well as cultivating the ability to anticipate the moment to begin capturing the scene are also good techniques.

My personal preference so far has been my K-5 with a DA 40 XS lens, and I'd like to try out the KP with that same fantastic lens. I would like to try out a GRIII as well, I've been impressed with what I've seen here on PF, as well as the work of others on several YouTube Channels.

BTW, there is a Street Photography Group and it would be great to capture more about all aspects of street photography in the group space, feel free to participate.

I do street portraits and really like the 50mm equivalent fov. In the past, I used a Pentax K30 and K3 with the da35mm 2.4. The da35 is a wonderful lens that focuses very quickly. Now I prefer to use a Canon ff with a 50 mm lens because the AF is more accurate.

Largely depends on one's personal understanding and style of street photography, I'd say. And this kind of shooting strikes me as less gear-dependent than some, or indeed most. That said, certain features of both camera and lens clearly help, such as
  • "low-profile" compactness and silence of operation
  • speedy AF or easy pre-focusing
  • a FL somewhere in the 24-to-70-mil range (FF equivalent)
  • (bonus, though not absolutely necessary,) fast aperture
Within the Pentax/Ricoh realm, my weapons of choice would either be a mid-range-to-flagship crop body coupled with the DA21 or the GRIII. Otherwise, use what you have and learn from trying to make it work. Consistently good street photography takes a lot of practice.

KP with the DA 20-40 2.8 Limited, or with the DA 40 Limited.
