Without Optibrite, I get the impression that most users are reasonably happy with their screens, but it's hard to wade through all those posts!
Well then, I'm an old fossil too, 'cause I miss the microprism/split screen from my ME super/K1000 days. Next time I'm feeling self-indulgent I'll probably get myself a Katzeye screen.

Well, I've got a Katz Eye (without Optibrite) in both my DS's. They tend to expose at +1/3 EV from the standard screen in both Matrix and CW metering modes. Not a big deal at all. The big issue is with spot metering. It is pretty much out the window.
So if you use spot metering a lot, then I would not recommend them. However, I find (being an old fossil also, My SV and Spotmatics just had the microprism screen) that the trade off is worth it. I don't use spot metering often, I do manual focus a lot.
Another option, the matte screen tends to have a bit more "bite" then the Pentax screens. Godfrey at DP Review had them make a custom screen without the range finders, and just duplicating the Pentax standard markings. He likes it a lot. Better manual focus and no exposure issues. Personally, I do like the optical range finder assist.
I hope this helps you all make a decision.
