Any rumors on a k-70 and kp replacement(s) ?

Supposedly, the k-70 and kp are out of production (right?)

Any rumors on a replacement?

KP is discontinued. K-70 still shows as in production.

Nope...just the KP, though residual stock is still available through the usual outlets.

This ^ ^ ^ is the months old rumor of a second APS-C model based on an unconfirmed whisper to the folk at PR. "Ground truth" is extremely thin at present and discussions on the topic are high on speculation and wishful thinking. All we know is that the KP is gone and the K-70 is getting long in the tooth.

There are plans for a K-70MKII:

The only difference is aperture control:

Because the solenoid still is stuck at rare moments, Ricoh discontinued the KP (which actually is the better DSLR but folk seems to prefer the K-70)
The momentary problem is shortness of parts (see K3III difficulties)
so Ricoh chose a new direction, i.e.:

HYBRID APERTURE CONTROL:

because the solenoid in rare situations was able to make problems,
Ricoh chose to go a complete new way:

Interaction of a stepper-motor with a solenoid:

a) aperture release, i.e "aperture into action": stepper-motor
b) aperture sleeping-modus: solenoid

This means the strong parts of both systems are brought together:

- When we need POWER
we have the NEW Motor, a true 12-cylinder of course.

- But for a Soft Release
we now have the solenoid going the opposite way, i.e.:

Ignoring the silly parts of this post, a K-90 {or whatever} does make sense -
a less expensive camera using the technology pioneered with the K-3iii -
especially if a good, but inexpensive, ‘standard’ lens is developed to pair with it,
so that aperture control is still possible even if the solenoid fails.

when you wrote that message, yes!
Now... few minutes later, no....

but alas, didn't you realize:

So it's time for some

I fully agree, sometimes it needs different approaches
Particular, if even on April fools day one is still in an urgent need to clench one's teeths or jaw.

So you see, even silly approaches might at times lead to possibilities....

You have a link? But of course!

The points you mention reflect the speculation I have read here and on other forums; however, I have not seen evidence that they are other than wishful thinking or "must have" for what I do statements or "must have" to escape the aperture control stigma. The hybrid solenoid concept is particular ingenious and...ummmm..."unique".

So for the K-70mkii, is the K-70 camera going to be upgradeable like the K1 to k1mk2? I've reduced my K70 use because of the aperture problem. Still watching the relay replacements on ebay dwindling.

It's right there:

Solenoid & Stepper Motor power problem. PROTECT ME!
but then, there still can be problems to be solved:

electrical engineering - Internal differences between latching solenoid and Stepper Motor - Engineering Stack Exchange
nevertheless:
Wishful as thinking might appear, it is the wrong approach:
Thinking can never wish.
Wrong faculty

so the solution goes like this

There are more rumours than different camera's!

Rumours enough. Ricoh will be a three-DSLR-models-company. And prices will shift as well. New K70 priced at KP level, K-3 III priced at FF level and and K-1 III priced at medium format level! (Yes I know that the 1st of April was yesterday .)

Ricoh should do something new and surprising for the successor of the K-70.

1. Make a new body and bring out three versions of cameras based on that: a Standard version, a Plain version, and a Monochrome version. Use the same components for all three versions, but design the body in such a way that various button configurations are possible, and make three versions of the firmware.

1.1 The functions of the Standard version are largely similar to what we have now. Prevent feature creep on this model and keep it simple on the outside. If people want an advanced camera they should buy the K3-III.

1.2 The Plain version is a minimalistic camera with an absolute minimum of buttons and controls. It should attract users with an eye for design and classic film camera users.

1.3 The Monochrome version is a Standard camera but with a monochrome sensor. Adjust the price upwards to keep it profitable.

2. Redesign the body to make it more ergonomic, with more room on the left side to hold the camera, a beveled bottom plate on the left side, and an increased overall height for the grip. Also shorten the pentaprism cover on the front similar to the K3-III for a sturdy look.

3. Do an upgrade quality wise and give this camera a metal body with weather seals. This would also legitimize asking a higher price.

4. Change the teasing policy. Just leak that Pentax is working on a K-70 successor and announce it 4 weeks before production. Nothing else.

Instead of producing another boring cheap camera I think this would be a fun project for the Pentax team they can throw their talent at and additionally an exiting challenge with the monochrome version.

I like your idea!
The minimalistic version sounds particular interesting, but also the Monochrome-Version.

Metal body is not that easy: I have come across several K5/K3's now (Magnesium Body) where the magnesium started to "blossom".
I had the same problem with a Goldring Legacy moving-coil cartridge (shipped from England, Bishop's Strotford, Herts.... 30 miles to the sea)
This cartridge has a magnesium body and the body "blossoms" (corrosion):
This is a sample of bad corrosion:
Magnesium Corrosion | National Air and Space Museum

Magnesium is very light but when it corrodes, its not very nice, WR is also in danger then.

Happy Easter!

Hi photogem, I'm following PF for many years already, but this is the first time I see someone mentioning corrosion of the body. It starts on spots where the paint is chipped off I guess.
