in class my teacher said if you travel anywhere you should register your camera, lenses, etc with customs so they have your serial #'s in the database, in case you come from hong kong or something they may charge you import fees thinking you went there and got it really cheap to bring home.

I've travelled a fair bit with a digital camera and never had problems. I read 'somewhere' that x-rays only affect film and not digital.

I would have thought you would only have a problem with duty on returning is if you have a grey market lens? Can't they tell from the serial numbers which county it's sold in?

Also many times the model name of the camera/lens is different for US imported products than for the rest of the world.
e.g. I believe that my old Minolta "Maxxum 70" was a Minolta "Dynax 60" in the non-US world.

I put my *ist DL through at least 10 x-ray machines on my trip last year and have had no problems at all with it.

Thanks for everyone's replies. I lost this thread so I couldn't reply before. I ended up not taking my gear, but it's nice to know in the future I will have no worries.
