I'm another vote for zxD being a much better name. Too bad we can't time travel. Maybe more cameras would have been sold which would have improved profitability maybe avoiding sold to Hoya and who knows what.

Welcome to the forum. Interesting find. I have an *ist DL and the 18-55 is good, just make sure it's the ALii version or newer. The original AL version is not as good. However, the DA 16-45mm is much better. I have both.
I have a Pentax Digital Kit Zoom list which shows the AL, the AL WR, and the DC WR RE. No ALii.
Hmmmm.

Done!
There are 5 different versions of the DA 18-55.

You can find them here Pentax DA Zoom Lenses - Reviews and Specifications - SLR and Interchangeable Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

and here Pentax DA L Zoom Lenses - Reviews and Specifications - SLR and Interchangeable Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

The first version had a different optical formula, the second model, the WR model, and the two DA L models used an improved optical formula. The DA L models lack quick shift and have plastic mounts, they did not include a lens hood in the box, they were only sold as a kit with a camera.

The DA & DA L 18-50 RE won't work with the *ist series. The *ist series, K100D and K110D lack the ability to focus a SDM, DC, or PLM lens.

Here are the different variants of the 18-55mm listed from oldest to newest.

SMC Pentax-DA 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 AL (first version)
SMC Pentax-DA 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 AL II (second version, new optical formula)
SMC Pentax-DA L 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 AL (plastic mount)
SMC Pentax-DA 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 AL WR (weather resistance)
SMC Pentax-DA L 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 AL WR (plastic mount, weather resistance)

The last four all are the same optical formula.

Note:
Pentax HD PENTAX DA 18-50mm f/4.0-5.6 DC WR RE Lens is not considered a kit lens, it is different, and will not autofocus on the *ist.

But the SMC DA L 18-50 f4-5.6 DC WR RE is a kit lens...it was only sold with the KS-1 and iirc KS-2.

Decision time.....do I spring for a DA 18-55 kit lens or even a DA 16-45 f/4, or sell the body. I like the camera so much I can't decide if I can bear to part with it.
I can certainly offer a copy of the original DA 18-55 kit lens for just the cost of postage if the OP is interested. I am only an hour or so away, so postage should be reasonable (send a PM if interested). My work has taken me to Korea several times, so I would love to see this unique camera put to good use.

Correct the DA L version of the 18-50 was sold as a kit lens with the K-S2. However, I think the K-S1 was only sold in a kit with the DA L version of the 18-55. The K-S1 body is not weather resistant.

Yes , the SMC DAL 18-50 WR RE is an interesting lens ( please note : this one has a green band not a grey/silver one , like all other DAL lenses ) , actually came with my K-s1 , later on I purchased hood and cap from HD version.
Now this lens permanently attached to my K-01 , a very nice kit.
Obviously not much good with zxD body.

I know this is getting off topic from the original thread but I was curious if your DA L 18-50 actually came from the factory with the K-S1, or if it was a package put together by a seller? As previously indicated, I was not aware of this lens shipping from the factory with the K-S1 (just the K-S2) but I could be wrong (especially if shipped to a different region).

It was a long time ago , I had to go through my empty boxes.
K-s1 was purchased in Japan and the box is just for the camera so the "kit" was created by the shop not manufacturer.
Not like kits : K-70/DA18-135 or K-3ll/DA16-85 were the boxes are housing both , camera and the lens.

I appreciate you taking the time to check. I would be surprised if they shipped a WR lens with a non-WR body but I believe they did the opposite (original K-30 kits), so it wouldn't be completely out of the question. Certainly an interesting lens but not suitable for the zxD as you indicated, due to the lack of power contacts on the camera.
