I think that you'll find that 30 f2.4 is actually closer to a 35 f2.4.

Since you have opportunities to revisit The City at will, and aren't concerned with missing a shot, take the 30mm and enjoy!

I encourage people to take the Circle Line boat trip around Manhattan at least once. It is a great way to see so much more than they otherwise would as well as learn a lot of history and interesting facts about NYC and the 5 boroughs. Photographically, the views from the water often provide a unique angle on the waterfront, bridges, and skyscrapers, as well as the little red lighthouse and the Statue of Liberty.

The Hudson River Valley area is beautiful, too, I look forward to seeing more of your photos.

Take the lens you're most willing to have taken from you.

If really only one lens - a zoom would be more versatile of course. With a prime, you will find yourself looking around only with the particular field of view the lens has. It might get too restrictive?
Best choice, however, is the one you think you feel comfortable with. Have fun!

Thanks again everyone. In the end I'm taking three lenses. :')

I'll let you know how it went.

I ended up just taking pictures of my family with the 35mm. I didn't use the Sigma at all. Who would have known. When I found out we were going to the Botanical gardens I decided to bring my favorite flower lens, the Vivitar 1.7. Unfortunately, we arrived there almost at 8:00 pm (typical for my family). But, with a little struggle, I got a few keepers. Thanks again for the insight though.

I just saw the topic and scrolled through with the intent on suggesting a single prime lens. I was to late but I was also correct!

Thanks for sharing the correct answer. Now we all know what to have in the camera bag in NYC.

Just one more thought: if the solution is one prime lens (say 35 mm), it might be useful to have also a compatible close-up lens in case of the Botanical Gardens (or something similar).

Can DA 35 Limited serve both goals?

Yes, it could, most times, I think. The minimum focus distance is similar between the DA 35 and the Vivitar 50. The Vivitar has the advantage in that it is a 1.7 v.s. the 2.4 from the 35. Of course, the Vivitar is purely manual though.

When I last went to NY I have to admit having a 15, 35 and 70mm lens on apsc, but photography was a large part of why I came and it wasn't a vacation.

Well of course, DA 35 Ltd Macro - a very good lens, no need for a close-up lens. But I think he had DA 35/2.4 AL?
