Battery from 2012, it's old, I would return it and ask for a new one not from 2012. While a 2012 battery may be working fine, the capacity won't be at its best, especially for the coming years of use.

<snipped for brevity> The question is, even if a 2012 battery works fine now, how much capacity will remain 5 years from now. IMO, they should sell 8 years old Li-Ion batteries as new, that's just wrong, knowing that Li-Ion battery wear out with time even if unused.
I think you've lost track of the original poster. The OP just received a battery that was manufactured at the end of 2018.

The batteries from 2012 were purchased by others, and received a long time ago. They've been using the batteries for years through many recharge cycles.

Surely the life expectancy of a rechargeable battery is measured in the number of recharge cycles possible before it stops holding any charge, rather than in years?

Thanks to everybody! I shall quit fretting about things and instead think about always having a warm spare battery this winter.
As mentioned, don't worry overly about the age, but you might find it takes a few charge cycles to get the expected usage out of it.

If left at 0% charge for years it could "possibly" damage the battery. But it's unlikely this battery was left in such a state since Lithium batteries are charged to about 50% before shipping.

This is a good primer on Li-ion care, and covers the effects of storage at various charge states and temperatures. Hint, there's a reason they are shipped from the factory with only a partial "storage" charge.

To the OP specifically, OEM Pentax batteries seem to have a good reputation for longevity, and sounds like you don't have much to worry about.
