Pentax K10D or Canon 30D

Basically what I'm asking is if you had the choice for either, which one would you choose? I don't want a K20D because of it's noise issues and the 14.6 mp images.

I have a lens for my canon, but it has right side softness, and a nifty fifty, which I also have for pentax.

So again, which would you choose, and why?

I chose the K10D over the 30D when I did my purchase in Spring of 2007. I compared features and performance based on reviews and then visited my friendly local camera store. They could not keep the K10Ds in stock, but I was able to play with the K100D. I then picked up the Canon 30D (mounted with the Canon kit lens) and figured at that instant where the better value was. All I had to do was handle the lens and body on the 30D and I knew that it was overpriced.

For a more comprehensive opinion see the report at Luminous Landscape. Comparisons to the 30D are a the end of the article.

Oh, and I had a stupid question, does the wheel on the back work in the same way as the 30D when reviewing images?

On my K20D, the front wheel/dial (the side where the lens mount is) allows you to scroll through images quickly and if you're in a zoomed out mode (where multiple photos show) it scrolls through pages.

The back dial (the side where the LCD is) is for zooming in and out.

I love this configuration, it's just like my old Nikons.

I believe it's the same with the K10D

I meant the back wheel around the Ok button. That's neat that the dials do it on the Pentax though.

The 'wheel" around the OK button changes the focusing area (full, selectable, center AF).

The area around the OK button is a D-Pad.

Might I ask though what kind of photography you're into? If you're a shooter that NEEDS fast AF and FPS, I'd recommend the 30D. If you're into traveling, everyday shooting, landscapes and such the K10D won't let you down.

I initially got the K20D for the build and seals, it got DRENCHED in the rain and bad weather in the mountains, rice terraces, and rainforests here in the Philippines. Never let me down. Fell in love with the optics of the primes afterwards, these Pentax primes are just fantastic.

I've handled Canons, Nikons, Sonys, Olys and Pentax and the Pentax and Nikons are far best in handling in my experience. My hands just love em.

It's a large photo, but it will help you with regards to the ergonomics/controls of the K10/20D:

Everything I do is landscapes, which is what's making this so much more appealing to me. I do portraits of The Golden Gate Bridge mostly.

The K10D would be an excellent choice for your landscape shooting. Pair it up with a 16-50 and you've got an awesome combo.

Or even the 16-45 which is what I've been drooling over (sadly it's not even one of the best!)

Probably means the hot pixels showing in very long exposures - fixed in a firmware update long ago.

Ah, not issues persay, but the fact that the 14.6 megapixel sensor creates more noise in the images compared to the 10 megapixel sensor. I don't need 14 megapixel images anyways, so I figure I might as well stick to the K10D.

I think you got it wrong. The K20D is less noisy than the K10D.
