As in the top button of the 4-way to switch drive modes?

Have you got it in AF select mode so it's selecting AF points with the buttons - if so, long press the centre button in order to use it for drive mode selection, I'm pretty sure that's how it still works on the K-1, same as previous cameras.

There's a walkaround from info and then from menu just to get it done with while you are on the session.
LAter you have to investigate if its a bad setting or a physical problem.

If you change to focus point select mode, does the button work as an up arrow? If so then it likely a settings or software issue. Otherwise its probably a hardware issue unfortunately.

Have you by chance hit the lock key which among other things disables the four-way controller?

That... was the problem exactly!

Thanks to all of you for your good and helpful suggestions. It was all a bit silly: My mother in law had one "all-I-want-for-Christmas"-wish, which was a photo of all her children, spouses and grandchildren together. Four of them flew in on December 20th from the US, and I had to rush there from a manuscript deadline workday to get the shot in time to have it printed for Christmas. So, there I was, my brain fried from too much work and a K1ii which (thanks, corona) I had not tried out with a self-timer before. I simply never noticed that centre button before.

Well, that ought to teach me to read the manual...
And now I learned about the lock button too. Thank you Ole!
