What would urge you to buy a new Pentax DSLR?

A lot of (un)founded rumors arise these days about the new KXXD: GPS, WLAN, bigger/smaller size, improved weather sealing, etc. Irrespective of these speculations, which affordable attributes (unfortunately KB-FF will most certainly not fall into this category) would convince you (in a rather saturated market) to buy a new Pentax DSLR?

For me killer features would be:
* "Stop-down coupler" ( Features and Operation of the crippled Kaf Mount )
* A-TTL
* Reliable AF@AL

Other things are welcome but may not really justify to buy another Pentax DSLR. So, what is your opinion?

nothing, i'm fine with the k20d.

it could do with a firmware upgrade though... long exposure NR among other things.

- Better High ISO quality.

There is an inprovement on the K20D over K10D, and I hope we still have more improvements in that area in the K30D... that's be awesome!

If the Km/2000 would ever be realeased in the U.S. as a body-only package, I'd buy one. But not for more than $500.

Basically nothing before summer 2009. My K10D is barely two years old (2 years and 7 days to be precise ), after all.

I may end up with a K20D, but I want to wait and see how its eventual successor will improve on it. What I am interested in is:

- better high-ISO image quality (equal to or better than the Nikon D300's)
- greater dynamic range
- faster AF

What I do *not* want:

- a larger sensor (APS-C is, IMHO, just about perfect).
- more megapixels, 14.6MP is more than enough
- faster burst rate, I practically never use 3 fps anyway
- a bigger camera

A second SD card slot might be nice. I recently upgraded to a K20 though, and wouldn't be in any hurry to replace it.

Better ISO preformance, and maybe a built in grip (I find them neat).

Price.
Anything that is competitive 6 or 10 MP, as long as one can use Pentax glass.
Echo the sentiment regarding body only K-m, preferably under $400.

My long range plan (well, 6 to 8 months) is to get the K20D. I've been concentrating on lenses this year and need to get a killer deal on the K20D. The only thing that could really get me to skip the K20D and get the next incarnation would be dynamic range, if the new camera performed some miracle and greatly improved dynamic range, I'd go for it.

Hmm... aside from the obvious me getting a K-m to replace my DS as my compact.

- It would need to be medium format (full frame 645 would be ideal)

or

- it would need to be a resonalby compact 35mm format (to go with my FA43)

APS-H sensor with about 16MP and High ISO performance a shade better than the K20D. AF tracking and low light focusing equal to my Sony A 700 and built in GPS. A body the same size as the K20D or a little smaller. LV good enough to use for fine focusing on static images. MSRP=$1,500. If it's an APS-C sensor I'd live with it.

A new AF system.

Something with more focus points and configurable arrangements.

Also give it theoption to switch between a close tight group of AF points for smaller, moving objects, (that often get lost between AF points of the current layout), and also a wide group for framing on specific areas on larger subjects as the current layout does now.

bazz.

  • 3" 920k LCD
  • Better operating system (Canon's 50D OS and Nikon's D90 OS makes Pentax's OS look like something out of the 80's)
  • A pentaprism with 1.1x magnification or more
  • 1/250th second flash sync or better
  • 14.6 megapixel APS-C is fine, just refine it more for better high ISO
  • Non jittery video recording would be a bonus also
  • Leave the K20D body basically the same, just make room for larger prism & LCD
If not that, an 18 megapixel full frame sensor in a Super A-esque body for $1500 would be mighty tempting.
