Pentax K20D battery options and sources?

Hello Folks,

Does anyone know of a legit source (on eBay?) for spare K20D batteries?

There are a lot of vendors on eBay who are selling knock-offs... are any of these safe to use? I certainly do not wish to ruin a $1K plus camera on a $10 battery.

Also, one of the really nice features that I have on my MZ-S cameras are the BG-10 grip; it allows me to use NiMH AA batteries. Is such an add-on available for the K20D? I hate to rely on a custom battery when I am not able to charge the battery.

The ability to use AA batteries has been a 'life saver' for me in the past.

Thanks,
Doug

Try B&H and see if they have the Minolta NP400 batteries in stock, they are basically the same battery as the K10 & 20, with a few less mah, 1500 vs. 1650 on the genuine Pentax. LOTS of people use these with no problems at all..And I think they run about $10, so you could buy 2 or 3 and have plenty of power available..

here is the link----> http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/297792-REG/Konica_Minolta_8699X001_NP_...tery_7_4v.html

If cost is an issue you might consider the Impact DL150 aftermarket battery from B&H - it's less than half the price of the Pentax battery and actually has a higher rated capacity (1700 vs. 1650 mAh). I've used one in my K10/20D cameras for over two years, alternating with my original Pentax batteries, and have had no problems. See Impact | DL150 Rechargeable Lithium-ion Battery | DL150 | B&H

I use my Impacts with the Pentax charger. Can't speak personally for the NP400's, but my impression is that they'd be fine, too.

I just recently bought the K20D and I bought 2 extra KM NP-400 battery that Stratman was talking about. I use the stock Pentax charger with no problem.

I have two NP-400 batteries that I charge with my Pentax charger. I rotate these two with my Pentax battery and cannot tell any difference with performance. They are great!

I got a knock off (says Power2000 on it) from Adorama. Seems fine.

ACD229 Adorama Replacement Rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery for Pentax DLI50 and Minolta NP-400 Digital Camera Battery, 7.4 Volts, 1500mAh.

Battery+Charger For Pentax D-LI50 DLI50 K10 K10D K20D - eBay (item 270316265318 end time Dec-17-08 23:29:30 PST)

I bought the above battery/charger kit back in May for my K20. The seller is "echobay" and they ship from Hong Kong. Here is what I have learned.

First, the charger which works both in home and in car is much better than the supplied one from Pentax. It is smaller and has better ergonomics. Also, the Pentax charger only works in home, in 110v sockets.

Second, the battery which came with the kit actually seems to out-perform the original K20 battery (Pentax). I am often in remote places and have to carry three batteries, all of which are regularly being charged in the Echobay charger, via my car cigarrette lighter.

I never want to miss a photo opportunity because I do not have a good battery. For example, on my last vacation, I shot over 12 gigabytes, and must have drained 5 batteries to do it.

Finally, I bought the K20 when it came out, so it is more than a $1000 camera where I am concerned.

Let me know if you need more information.

Wow, I wish I'd seen that deal on eBay when I was looking. I settled for a LI50/NP-400 that works just great in a BG2, but that battery + charger deal sounds good. I have a friend who has a battery grip for a Canon Rebel which uses a little sled to hold AA's. I wish there were a similar option for Pentax. I liked the eneloops that my K100D used.

I got a pair of the Minolta NP-400's from B&H for my K10D and they work well. I have noticed they seem not quite as long as the original battery but that's to be expected because of the smaller mAh rating.

Charging with the regular Pentax charger is not an issue.

I'll probably be finding out soon. Unexpectedly, my K20D is coming with a kit, (Yay!) so I will get to try one of Adorama's off-brand ones in there. From the picture, they look to be the same brand as my spare for the Lumix FZ-7 I've been using: there were no problems with that. It doesn't hold a charge quite as long as the stock one, something that I noticed after a while. I'm not sure if it's a matter of it not aging as well or if it just took me that long to notice. (With a P&S as it is, I have maybe once shot the battery near dry: mostly it's just convenient to swap batteries in and out for charging)

Anyway, it seems a fair value for money. We'll see how the K20D likes em. My thought is, eventually I'll break down and get the battery grip, and then I'll want three batteries to rotate: it seems I see some deals on the stock ones here and there that probably would make the pentax one worth it to me, if there's a difference.

The following will work in the K10D or K20D:

Pentax DL150 (1650mAh)
Minolta NP400 (1500mAh
Promaster PNP-400 (1500mAh)
Impact IMDL 150 (1700mAh)

I've got most of the above - 2 Pentax, 1 Promaster, and 2 Impact. All charge in the Pentax or the CTA brand chargers.

Hey pentaxmz, bite ther bullet and get the real thing, if you think about the amount of investment you have in equipment, don't risk inferior batteries.
