photographing race cars

I am look for some advice on the best way to shoot a race car with my k100d.

More specifically amateur street car drag racing right off the starting line.

Camera location could vary from 50' away and 12' above track level to being 20' or less away at track level. The events start in daylight and end well into the night. There is lighting, but not enough to get a clean shot of a 8 second car launching, so I am looking for a flash recomendation too.

Would the DA 50-200mm f4 work well in this situation?

This is just a hobby for me so spending $700 on a lens specifically for this is not an option.

Any imput is appreciated.

I can tell you up-front that a flash won't work: they're usually only effective up to 10 feet.

Remember to use the fastest possible shutter speed if you wan't to capture the cars sharply. However, having a slight motion blur wouldn't hurt either- it's a nice effect.
