New K20D - (not quite) The First Picture

Here's one of the first pictures that I took with my new K20D - relinquished by my wife yesterday, Christmas morning. This shot was taken RAW with a DA 40/2.8 at ISO 1600: 1/20sec @ f/4.0. I processed and converted it with the Pentax software, at which I'm fairly untutored for high ISO shots (although I use it routinely for low ISO ones); normally I use Bibble and Noise Ninja, but the program I have doesn't recognize files from a K20D. The image looks a bit red, so I need to play with WB some more.

Anyway, my intial impressions of the K20 (vis a vis my K10D) are fairly positive. AF behavior of the two cameras is very similar (if the new camera is faster, I can't tell it), but the meter on the K20 calls for about +0.5 EV and thus produces a slightly brighter image (not better or worse - just different). From what I've seen in the 24 hours I've owned the camera, noise at ISO 1600 in shots from the K20D has grain with a more narrow size distribution than do those from my K10D and produce a less "blotchy" look. Still early days, however, and lots yet to discover.

Note the irony of a four-year-old after Christmas; tons of new toys available and she chooses to play with a box! Never fails.

Jer

That is a funny picture. Very contrasty image itself. Glad that you had upgraded the camera too. The diffrerence is obvious, isn't it?

My friend, you are too kind - as usual. I think it's a bit too contrasty. I think I overdid it - still learning a new camera. I recall relearning PP after moving from my DS2 to my K10D.

Have a Happy New Year.

You know, you could have just gotten her some empty boxes and used the money spent on her gifts to buy more toys for yourself.

Heehee. Haven't even installed the RAW converter on my old Mac. Guess I should do that, though. (Don't want to find out if I need a new computer before I even push the RAW button. ) Looks pretty nice, though.
