K200d off camera Flash

Alright so this is my first thread on this forum. I've been checkin out the Strobist blog and decided I need an off camera flash. My concern is which to get? The recomended a nikon SB-24 or vivitar 285HV. I was thinking a used AF360 would be a better option because of the wireless mode, only to find I can buy a $20 transmitter on ebay. im a starving college student so $120 was about max for the 360. For perpective the vivitar was $90. Any replys are apprevcitaed.

pic for clic. used the $10 macro studio here Strobist: How To: DIY $10 Macro Photo Studio . Pentax M F2 50mm on K200d

You'll never hear it mentioned on Strobist, but take a look at the Pentax AF200T. Two auto power levels and four manual power levels and should run you no more than $25~30 at the very most.

My Low-Budget Flash Flickr Set has photos done primarily with the AF200T.

Here's my 2 cents. If you are planning to use the flash in manual with a wireless trigger, pretty much every flash out there will do, and you can find much better deals than the 285HV's, which IMO are vastly overpriced due to the "strobist effect". (And the new ones have some reliability issues, to boot.) Look for a used 283, or an old sunpak. In fact, for $120 you can probably buy yourself 2 decent used manual flashes and 2 cheapy wireless triggers, and have much more fun and creative options than with a single flash.

That said, the ability to do wireless P-TTL is not to be underestimated for everyday use, so if you can get your hands on a well-used 360 for $120, and don't mind sacrificing some power, go for it, and save a bit for another cheap manual flash and triggers later.

Thanks for the input. Already found, and have bid on an AF200t in eBay. Have a feeling I won't be disappointed with it. Hopefully I can find another, or a cheap vivitar and get a couple remote triggers. Thanks for the replys. The 360 was used on amazon.

FTD7000M pentax version will not work for off camera work with triggers. They do work well in optical slave mode though. Promaster says the pentax and minolta version require the TTL pin to receive voltage / communication from the camera. I tried everything including hacking in a port with no luck. Get the Nikon version of this flash and it will trigger with anything. PT04, 602's etc...

It's funny you should post that link. I just built one of these lightboxes. Found a box in the garage, 15"x15"x13". Got some white, lightweight material from Walmart, backing or something, not real sure what it is. Cut the holes, taped the fabric on. I bought a 100w "clearlight" bulb, a GE Reveal I think and put it in a lamp I have over my night stand. Snapped away. When I take pics, I move everything off my nightstand, put the lightbox on there, move the lamp down onto the box, and start taking pics. It's great for pics of things to sell on ebay. I don't have a flash, and I don't use my K200D's onboard flash. Here's just one example. I'm not sure the addition of a flash could make this setup better.

Good luck. BTW, if I had my camera right now, I'd post pics for you. But it's at Pentax service.
