Old flash on K200D

Well I have acquired for nothing a Sunpak external flash (from K1000 film SLR days) and was wondering what the best way to use it on my K200D is (safely)?

I read something about large voltages damaging dSLR's so not to use old style flashes directly on the hotshoe. what are my alternatives? i guess a wireless hotshoe trigger would work fine? are the deal extreme ones any good?

I can't really offer any advice on dealing with high voltage flashes, but as far as using an old flash, I've had rather nice results with the following:

Set your camera to manual, with the shutter speed withing sync range (I've had good results using 1/125s in conjunction with my AF16) and then adjust your aperture based on the distance of your subject. Most manual flashes have a nifty chart on the back for this. Just whatever you do, don't trust the green button.

Yet again, the same question - I've probably asked it myself.

1. Check the flash voltage Measuring the Voltage on a Vivitar 285 or 285HV Flash Head - Life is a and Photo Strobe Trigger Voltages
2. Use a peanut aka remote flash controller Seagull SYK-5 Wireless Flash Remote controller
3. Do a search of the forum
4. google it.

Good luck
